If you can find "Recreational" Fuel, you can stock up on that. It has a much longer shelf life, I have been told up to 4 years even.

Regular automotive gas will go bad in a few months. It will still burn, but not like it should. Modern vehicles may have issues with it.

Re: To stock up on gasoline or not !
Always keep your tank above 1/4 anyway, because driving around with little gas in tank can damage fuel pump ( gasoline cools pump). It costs almost $1000 in labor and parts to remove a gas tank, replace damaged pump. Also, air in tank increases condensation and water buildup in gasoline.

Gasoline will stay plentiful and cheap, but never let the tank get low for other reasons.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 77192746

Many older vehicles have steel gas tanks, that if you only fill it halfway, the ethanol in the gas will condense on the sides and top of the tank, eventually pitting the tank, creating a hole.

Added ethanol is the standard in gasoline now, for all grades. There is a requirement to state that it doesn't have ethanol in it. So, if your local gas station doesn't have a sticker on the pump stating that there is 10% ethanol in it, don't worry it's all there.

Recreational fuel is recommended for all small engines, especially chainsaws. And don't forget to add the special oil additive to chainsaw gas. Even pour a little out to make certain that it has the blue dye in it, or purchase the Motofuel by Stihl, it's made with 95% paraffin gasoline. It has so much paraffin in it that you can smell it when you run your saw. The exhaust gasses will smell like candle wax. It's pricey, but replacing the saw is more expensive than the fuel you run in it.

So I have several contacts in the armed forces and a couple of them have warned to stock up on fuel. I know there have been several posts here about this yet I am not sure of the validity of this.

If there really is something way more sinister than the virus about to happen then yes , I could see where having some fuel reserves would be a good thing.

Or maybe if they do go ahead and initiate a 2 week or more nationwide quarantine then again, it would probably be a good idea to have extra fuel in case the power goes out.

Either way, we are all most certainly living in unsure, crazy times and the only way America will get through this is if we all stand together. Take care of your neighbors and they will take care of you!

buy gas and you can watch the Phase separation when ethanol in the fuel absorbs too much water, and separates from gasoline by dropping to the bottom of the tank since the ethanol and water mixture that results from phase separation is heavier than gasoline.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 78648975

I pay the extra and buy off road fuel, 100% gasoline with no ethanol.
 Quoting: Sodbuster

Uh, off road fuel should cost less, it does not include road taxes.

No. Please.

No need to hoard gas too at this point, unless you absolutely need it to travel for the kind of work you do.

There are people who do need it for that, and hoarding it will only ensure they won't have any, just like the healthcare workers who can't get masks now.

The market is flooded with gasoline. While so many people are out of work, they aren't burning any gas anyways.

The off-road title is confusing. The AC was talking about regular pump fuel that is 92 Octane with no Ethanol. It is best for motorcycles, 4 wheelers, mowers, ect. It is usually 30 cents or more per gallon

With diesel you are right, it is cheaper, but has dye in it.
 Quoting: Bud Fox

Recreational fuel that is 100% gasoline is about $1 more per gallon. We have no fuel in Michigan that is ethanol free, even the premium 92 octane has ethanol in it.

Fill up at least. Only reason there would be a fuel shortage is a shortage if truckers to make deliveries and maybe lack of enough support staff at distribution. But with quaratine no one should be out doing a lot of driving. I think most stations need at least 2 deliveries a day.

For storing, ONLY get the 100% gasoline and NOT the 10 or
15% ethanol. Ethanol absorbs water and spoils the gasoline
at a much higher rate.

The more refined a gas product is, the faster it goes bad.

- Keronsene will last 5+ years untreated
- Diesel a year +
- Gasoline several months

Use a fuel stabilizer to lengthen that time. Kerosene can last a decade or more, Diesel 5-10 years (use an anti bacterial too), and gas with Stabil brand is good for a 1.5-2 years. I use PRI-G stabilizer, which I know lasts 3 years in a can, but others claim as much as 5 years. These are all conservative estimates.

It's not a case of shortages, but more of forced closures of station chains to preserve stocks and keep travel at a minimum.

I took this into account last week and stocked up just to be safe. On top of that we have bad spring weather coming here soon, and there are ALWAYS outages in my area so I have plenty of stock for the genny.

Where you driving if you are quarantined? Think there is going to be a gas shortage due to all the other people driving?

Keep your tank more than half full during events like this, but gas would be low priority with this situation.

Stoves and tools bro. Many of us have backpacking liquid fuel stoves as backup cooking options. Also uncut lawns can become fire hazards come summer. The World is changing quick.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 72497887

Most stoves (if any???) don't use gasoline as far am I am aware. Liquid fuel stoves for backpacking are usually some sort of alochol/ethanol. At least the ones I use are. There are propane/butane ones out there as well.

Gasoline will probably be around in abundance due to no one driving so getting gas for lawn mower won't be an issue. If electricity goes, then yes you won't be able to get gas to mow your lawn, but you would have bigger problems.

THANKS I was told they had a fuel stabiliser and a cleaner. Last year I had some boat problems and I though he said sea foam but I differ to your expertise... THANKS yoda
 Quoting: blackdiamond

Another alternative is PRI-G (there is also PRI-D for Diesel). It is similar to stabil, but lasts a lot longer and also has an Octane booster. I find it works better for octane-sensitive items like 4-wheelers, motorcycles, chain saws, ect.

It is more expensive, but a bottle also goes a lot further. It cost $35 for a bigger bottle, but that will do 500+ gallons of gas, as opposed to 88 gallons for a similar sized stabil
 Quoting: Bud Fox

Just bought me some of that PRI-G off Amazon....thanks for the heads up.

I asked him about the fuel supply. He said there is so much fuel in reserve, his suppliers are bugging him to buy gas he can't even store as his fuel tanks are to capacity.

He also mentioned there has been a buildup of reserves the past year.
