Re: ACLU Says Rhode Island Policy of Stopping New Yorkers is Not Constitutional
I live in Rhode Island. They had the head of the State Police on the local radio program this morning explaining the process. He says that they will not be using these stops for anything other than asking if they are staying in RI, getting info about where they will be staying if so, and informing them that they will be under a mandatory 2 week quarantine. They will be having troopers at the border, at the base of the Newport bridge, and on roads in Westerly that people use to get into RI whithout going on 95. They are also stationing National Guard at the two train stations and bus depot for anyone from NY traveling in that way.

Honestly, I generally hate our Governor and certainly didn't vote for her but I do think she is doing a decent job in her response to this so far. The NY thing I'm not sure about though. It's one things to impose restrictions on citizens of our state but I'm not sure how she is legally allowed to have people from other states pulled over just for being from that state.

And what about CT? They are starting to have a mess there in Southern CT spreading over from NYC. So many southern CT people work in NYC and can still be coming in. But, we can't ban cars from CT considering a lot of our residents work in the state (including my husband and he has CT tags on his work car). I'm just not sure that banning NY would even have much of an effect here.

No, you should welcome New Yorkers with open arms and in fact encourage millions of them to come to your state because NYC is infested with Corona virus.

Do it for luv, give them free hotel rooms! The Govt will pay you back later.

I'm sure Florida could divert 20 or 30 planeloads a day your way!

Re: ACLU Says Rhode Island Policy of Stopping New Yorkers is Not Constitutional
The selfish ny'ers who happen to have 2nd homes in wealthy newport, block island, westerly... have been told if they want to retreat here they must quarantine for 14 days at that home once here. It seems people arent abiding by that, and so yes, ny plates will be stopped & asked where they're going. Block island has 3 ventilators at a 14 bed tiny hospital. They cant allow even one infection there, theyd be decimated.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 37609161

That fucking fine, but the Constitution doesn't give a fuck about quarantine. The word isn't in the document. You want to initiate this kind of draconian measure, then martial law needs to be declared.

This is simple and a matter of law. The Governor is a fucking cunt. What if you are a URI student from NY and you drive your NY car around.

What you gonna get stopped every fucking few miles so your papers can be checked?

Anyone with NY plates in RI is now a fucking criminal by decree. It's fucking ridiculous and the ACLU is dead fucking nuts right on this.

Get the fuck out of here with your commie sympathetic bullshit.

BUT, that said, I still support NY residents having freedom to go where the fuck they want, when they want, including to a their homes in RI.

The islands of of Long Island don't have the supplies or the medical care to deal with an influx of people. You've got to be flown off Block Island via Lifestar to a mainland hospital. Combine it with an elderly population and all it takes is one person. It's a closed colony. Nobody is trying to take anyone's rights away. They are just trying to keep a vulnerable population as safe as possible. Im' in Connecticut and I think at some point if the outbreak gets much worse in the tri-state area, we may have an interstate travel ban.

"While Raimondo has the authority to suspend some state laws and regulations to address a medical emergency, she cannot suspend the Constitution, ACLU of Rhode Island Executive Director Steven Brown said in a statement late Thursday.

“Under the Fourth Amendment, having a New York state license plate simply does not, and cannot, constitute ‘probable cause’ to allow police to stop a car and interrogate the driver, no matter how laudable the goal of the stop may be,” he said."
 Quoting: FUCK THIS BITCH 76820193

New Yorker here. Under the National Emergency, I suspect that the 4th Amendment is limited. Don't you believe in states' rights? RI should be able to keep out NYers at this time, even though normally I am sure it would violate many things including usurping the federal authority to regulate interstate commerce.

How else can Trump open up part of the country, if barriers can't be established?

Combine it with an elderly population and all it takes is one person. It's a closed colony. Nobody is trying to take anyone's rights away. They are just trying to keep a vulnerable population as safe as possible. Im' in Connecticut and I think at some point if the outbreak gets much worse in the tri-state area, we may have an interstate travel ban.

So what.

'They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety.'

Incidental annoyance when those you were forced to pay well to protect you are the ones that abuse and kill you out of their own convenience

There is no anger in Me: If one offers Me thorns and thistles, I will march to battle against him, And set all of them on fire.

L.A. County closes all beaches to deter crowds
Los Angeles County has closed all of its beaches in an effort to reduce crowds and slow the spread of the coronavirus.

Last week, some Southern California beaches, hiking trials and parks were packed despite strict measures meant to keep people apart. In response, many piers, parks, trails and beach parking lots have been closed.

(from LA Times, <50%)

This has the effect of protecting the property owners along the beach. In California, all beaches are public, so you can walk on the beach in front of the mansions of Malibu etc. Now with the beach closed, the unwashed masses have less access to the wealthy who are probably trying to wall themselves off now.

Seawater is very curative. It's not good for public health to restrict access to the sea during this pandemic.
