At 1.79%, the mortality rate for COVID-19 is almost 18 times higher than the seasonal flu as of now. The increasing mortality rate is disturbing, which I sure hope changes. A couple of days ago the US mortality rate was 1.5%, and has risen to just under 1.8%; 0.3% is a lot of lives, and is 0.2% higher than the 0.1% mortality rate for the seasonal flu. Unfortunately, the thought that as testing increased the mortality rate would decrease is not working out that way so far. While there are more COVID-19 cases than confirmed, the same is true for the seasonal flu; you often hear others (and perhaps yourself) say I had/have the flu, without a test.
While these experts can make projections all they want, the cold hard and very unfortunate numbers is the reality.

With the death of a nurse in New York yesterday, many nurses (such as the 12 nurses at the University of Illinois Hospital In Chicago that tested positive), doctors (like the dozens of doctors in Italy that died), first responders (such as EMS personnel and police officers, like the over 500 NYPD officers that tested positive with 1 death) brings home that nurses, doctors, other health care workers, and first responders are risking their (and their familiars) health to treat patients.
