United States 03/31/2020 07:45 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Anyone tried making hand sanitizer? Need tips.. I've got plenty of 70% isopropyl alcohol and just got a gallon of vegetable glycerin. Was thinking those two ingredients would be sufficient but something is off. Started off with the container about halfway full of alcohol and slowly started adding the glycerin. If you add too much glycerin, it sort of sticks to your hands and doesn't come right off or evaporate like hand sanitizer; but even when you have reached that point the solution is still not thick enough. Don't put enough glycerin and it comes out really runny but otherwise acts pretty close to proper sanitizer. Many of the DIY recipes recommend Aloe Vera, but that isn't widely available and is just as hard to get as regular sanitizer.. so that's a no-go. Found this info online: According to the wikipedia article on hand sanitizers, polyacrylic acid and polyethelyne glycol are commonly used thickeners. You could try any hydrophilic polymer if those aren't available. Cornstarch might even work if you dissolved it in the alcohol before adding the other ingredientsHas anyone tried this and if so do you have any advice on an inexpensive way to improve my sanitizer?Last Edited by hellno2 on 03/31/2020 07:49 PM |

Just brainstorming here. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 78073861 I think the water is actually in the rubbing alcohol (38% water) making it one of the prominent ingredients. I think adding water would make it more runny instead of thicker. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 78073861 Hmm.. interesting idea. I'm not chemist though - would have to do the research to make sure that was safe before trying to heat it. Also it seems like the thing to try removing excess water from would be the rubbing alcohol not the glycerin. Seems like adding a thickener would be safer. Maybe best to just say fuck it, and use the alcohol straight, or cut with a little water. Put it in a spray bottle that mists it out. Mist it onto your hands, rub them together.
In the end it's the same thing. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 78073861 Yeah that's what I've been doing. The straight alcohol is really hard on your skin so I wear gloves. The sanitizer is more for family members who can't get any. |

Hmmm, the recipes I've read used aloe vera and alcohol. I don't know about anything else. Of course, all the stores were out of those two things by the time I decided to make my own....
