Illegal Border Crossings Fall to Zero
Well, there's some good news amid our current crisis.

Illegal border crossings fall to zero in pandemic
by Anna Giaritelli | April 04, 2020

(Washington Examiner) - The number of foreigners arrested for illegally entering the United States from Canada, Mexico, and along the coasts have dropped to almost nothing in the past week as the U.S. became the world leader in confirmed cases, according to Department of Homeland Security officials.

Only 79 people were encountered Sunday by Border Patrol agents nationwide after they had attempted to enter the country between ports of entry. If that rate continued over the course of a month, it would make for fewer than 2,500 apprehensions, a drop in the bucket compared to the 30,000 arrests that agents made just on the southern border in February and 132,000 at the peak of the border crisis last May.

Border arrests reflect the number of people attempting to cross.

“It’s like next to nothing. For almost a week, their apprehensions have been under 150,” said a high-ranking border official who was not authorized to speak. “This is what happened on 9/11 — on steroids. Mexico has locked down a lot of their country … and then they [migrants] think if they come to the U.S., they’re going to catch the virus.”

On March 27, the number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the U.S. surpassed that of China and Italy, each of which had the most up until then. Of the more than 1 million known cases worldwide, more than 290,000 are in the U.S., far more than the number reported in the countries where most immigrants encountered at the southern border have fled, according to the Johns Hopkins University of Medicine tracker. Mexico has more than 1,600 confirmed cases, and countries in the northern triangle of Central America have each reported dozens to more than 200 each. Nevertheless, because some people do not yet have symptoms and testing is not widespread, the actual count is likely much higher.

A top Border Patrol official in Texas said the number of illegal immigrants encountered in the past week was down "tremendously" to "single-digit [apprehensions] per shift" from hundreds per day earlier this year.

“It’s just more proof that it’s a trillion-dollar business model,” the first border official said, referring to how transnational criminal organizations facilitate human smuggling. “It’s all a business, and it’s going down just like any other business model right now.”

2,060 Chinese Nationals Apprehended At U.S.-Mexico Border in Fiscal Year 2019
By Terence P. Jeffrey | March 18, 2020

(CNS News) - The Border Patrol apprehended 2,060 aliens from the People's Republic of China crossing the U.S.-Mexico border in fiscal year 2019, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

The Border Patrol defines an "apprehension" as "the physical control or temporary detainment of a person who is not lawfully in the U.S. which may or may not result in an arrest."

A Border Patrol data sheet lists the number of "total apprehensions" it made in fiscal year 2019 by both the citizenship of those apprehended and the border sector where the apprehension took place.

In fiscal year 2019, the Border Patrol apprehended a total of 2,134 Chinese nationals. This included the 2,060 apprehended at the Mexican border, 47 at the Canadian border and 27 at coastal borders, which include the Border Patrol's New Orleans Sector, Miami Sector and Ramey Sector in Puerto Rico.

Clearly, people from China seeking to become "not lawfully" present in the United States are more likely to come here through Mexico than through Canada or by sea.

But this is not only true for aspiring illegal immigrants from the People's Republic.

It is also true, for example, for people from Iran, Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria.

In fiscal 2019, the Border Patrol apprehended 24 Iranians, including 14 at the Mexican border, 8 at the Canadian border and 2 at the coastal borders.

It apprehended 17 Afghanis, including 12 at the Mexican border and five at the Canadian border.

It apprehended six Iraqis, including four at the Mexican border and two at the Canadian border.

It apprehended three Syrians, including two at the Mexican border and one at the Canadian border.

...The dramatic downturn in attempted illegal entries to the U.S. comes a day after the Trump administration announced plans to send an additional 540 troops to the U.S.-Mexico border, which includes Texas, Arizona, New Mexico, and California. Gen. Terrance O’Shaughnessy, the U.S. NORTHCOM commander, cited an “increased demand signal” to help federal agents on the southern border even as arrests stand at the lowest levels in several decades.

“The issue is what to do with everyone on the border since there’s no one to arrest,” the official said. “They flushed out the academy, and they need places for them to go. People are on the payroll, and you have to have them start doing work.”

The U.S. shut down the northern and southern borders to nonessential travel, leading to a downturn in travelers attempting to drive or walk through inspection lanes. Customs and Border Protection has diverted between 300 and 400 port officers and Border Patrol agents to the northern border...

US Border Falls Quiet with Millions of Mexicans Barred
Susan Shand - April 05, 2020

(VOA) - The world’s busiest land border has fallen quiet. Restrictions meant to contain the spread of the new coronavirus have stopped millions of Mexicans from making daily trips north to the United States. That includes many who work at U.S. businesses.

At least 4 million Mexicans who live in cities along the 3,144-kilometer-long border have been affected by the restrictions on travel. The measures do not permit short crossings into American cities to visit family, get medical care or buy goods.

Many of those affected have legal “border crossing cards,” which are for meant visits not related to work. Reuters reporters spoke to more than 20 people who live in Tijuana, Nogales and Ciudad Juarez. Most use their cards to care for family members on the U.S. side of the border. Some use them to work illegally.

All of those who spoke with the reporters said they could no longer make the crossing. This has also affected businesses on the U.S. side of the border that hire them – illegally – for agricultural jobs...

The coronavirus restrictions have stopped all non-essential travel across the border. However, the restrictions do not stop Americans from going to Mexico...

Before the coronavirus restrictions, more than 950,000 people entered the United States from Mexico every day. That information comes from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agency...
