I don't have an official opinion on the validity of the numbers, but I don't believe everybody everywhere is faking them. If this were able to burn freely through the population, I think it would make 1918 look trivial.

Definitely politics over facts. It’s just the facts aren’t conducive to Trump’s re-election. So they’d rather pretend all we need to do is open the economy back up quickly and we’ll get back to normal. This isn’t magically going away. Even if the summer *does* bring a little respite, it will be back in the fall, and I don’t even think summer will slow this down much. Our social distancing has had a significant dampening impact, and now people want to use that as evidence it’s not as bad. Well, in order to achieve “not that bad” we’ve had to approach depression level unemployment. We had to take extreme measures to get these numbers. They surely would have been much worse without any mitigation measures and we’re going to have to learn it the hard way like everything else because people in this country can’t think further than a foot in front of them. Normal is over for the foreseeable future.

Actually, the Surgeon General said recently that this time in April would be another Pearl Harbor or 9-11 for the US.

He was correct.

Nothing wrong with ignoring a hurricane forecast when the actual data shows the hurricane going in a different direction.

When actual data is not available, there is nothing wrong with planning and acting based on predictive modeling. Once data comes in and shows a divergence from the initial model, it would be stupid to continue the course and not make adjustments based on real information.

I like President Trump but I had to laugh because this reminded me of the Sharpie incident and a hurricane track.
