Michigan’s stay-at-home order expires April 30. Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D) has said she hopes to take some "steps forward" to reopen the state starting May 1.
"I do hope to have some relaxing come May 1, but it's two weeks away and the information and the data and our ability to test is changing so rapidly it's hard to tell precisely where we'll be in a week from now much less two," Whitmer told “Good Morning America” on April 17.
She also warned that large group protests of her stay-at-home order could lead to extending her order. Michigan and several other states over the weekend saw small groups protesting that stay-at-home orders infringe on personal rights.Schools are closed through the rest of the school year.

“I want to be clear, we will likely need another short-term extension of the stay home, stay safe order,” Whitmer said.
“We see these signs and know that perhaps we can start to take some small steps forward,” Whitmer said, indicating it is “an appropriate time to reassess the breadth” of her current order. “It will be in waves.
There will be some form of a stay-at-home order in effect for a long time here.”
“My powers come from a couple different parts of statute, and so I believe that regardless of what the Legislature does, I still retain those powers,” the governor said Monday in a separate briefing.
“But I would like for them to be partners in this.”
That’s her telling the republicans they can eff off, she’s doing it her way, but would love if they fell in line and obeyed but it’s not necessary
