Essential Workers in Michigan to Receive Free College Tuition under Whitmer Plan


Michigan governor Gretchen Whitmer announced a new coronavirus plan based on the GI Bill to give front-line workers free college tuition, billing it as the first program of its kind in the country.

Those eligible under the “Future for Frontliners” plan would be workers including “the ones staffing our hospitals and nursing homes, stocking the shelves at grocery stores, providing child care to critical infrastructure workers, manufacturing PPE, protecting public safety, picking up trash or delivering supplies,” the state revealed in an announcement.

Whitmer extends emergency declaration without legislature

After the House refused to extend the state of emergency on Thursday, the governor says she has extended the declaration.


Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed off on three executive orders on April 30:

An order terminating the current state of emergency and disaster declaration

An order that clarifies the state of emergency remains in effect through May 28, 2020 at 11:59 p.m. under the Emergency Powers of the Governor Act of 1945

An order that declares the state of emergency and a state of disaster across the state through May 28, 2020 at 11:59 p.m. under the Emergency Management Act of 1976.

The governor said she will evaluate the need for the emergency and disaster declaration prior to their expiration dates, and if she decides it's no longer necessary— she will terminate it.

He said the doctors seem to be split along party lines also, he said he’s never seen anything like this

Here's what's changed in Michigan's response to the COVID-19 crisis: Instead of a government that adheres to the state Constitution, it has a governor who has claimed dictatorial authority.

Until now, Whitmer's emergency powers had at least been nominally endorsed by the state Legislature, which granted her an extension on April 9 when, under law, her initial declaration of emergency expired.

The extension expires again on Thursday, and the governor will not go to the Legislature for approval to keep her orders in place. Instead, she will act unilaterally to give herself total control, with no checks on her actions.

This is a dangerous place to be, particularly when no one can say for certain when the crisis will end. She's already abused her powers for political purposes by hiring a firm tightly bound to the Democratic Party to track virus data.

In my Sunday column, I say the Legislature has no choice but to go to court to reestablish its Constitutional role.

Michigan Legislature: No emergency extension; authorizes lawsuit against Gov. Whitmer



An unusual day in Lansing inside the state Capitol as the Republican-controlled Legislature did not vote to extend Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s emergency powers declaration but authorized their ability to file a lawsuit against the Democratic governor over her response to COVID-19.

The resolution approved by the House gives Speaker Lee Chatfield, R-Levering, the authority to file a lawsuit against Whitmer, though he said a decision hadn’t been made as of Thursday, April 30, 2020.

“We have to be prepared to take the next steps should she not accept her offer of partnership. We have three branches of government; the executive, the legislative and the judicial,” Chatfield said. “They all have their role, even in a pandemic and this may be one where we get the third branch of government involved.”

The Senate approved a similar resolution, authorizing Senate Majority Leader Mike Shirkey, R-Clarklake, to file litigation as well. During a passionate floor speech, Shirkey said the end of the governor’s executive powers “means we return to a system of checks and balances that ensures all voices are heard. It also means the legislature must vote to ensure continuity of other necessary changes made via executive order.”

My 81 year old mom is waiting on double hip replacement that she really needs, that was supposed to happen in early February . This is causing so much pain and misery on the citizens of this state.
Little things are compounding into more serious life threatening illnesses. Our immune systems are being severely weakened the longer we are in lockdown. When kids finally interact again simple colds will run rampant and our children will be constantly sick.
