The after effects of a broad outage would be closer to NYC in 2004 or the Bahamas during Hurricane Dorian. No power anywhere vs. a normal storm that leaves some areas still in lights.

No power=no gasoline, no credit/debit card transactions, sometimes no water. Our society would begin to crumble in days not weeks.

I work in the power generation industry. Most power plants are controlled by Windows 7 desktop computers, linked to Allen Bradley PLCs which actually do the direct controlling of the generation unit.

Is there such a thing as a desktop PC made in the USA? I don't think the PLCs are made in the USA either, actually I'm sure they aren't.

How the hell am I supposed to go about rectifying this situation? It could cost millions of dollars to convert the PLC logic to an American made PLC, of which I don't even know of one that exists.

I get the sense the electrical grid may be vulnerable, especially in the coming weeks/months as this covert war between factions and world events intensifies. I feel this is a positive thing to make the grid more secure.

How the fuck is it going to do that? All the computer components that control the grid were made in China.

You're telling me that with a stroke of a pen, Trump just required the entire grid to throw out their computers and PLCs and replace them with domestically made hardware, which even if it FUCKING EXISTED, would cost a trillion dollars to replace????

A tree fell, late on a Thursday night during a storm. Wiped out the power, tore the mast off the house. We called BCHydro using the battery power from a now defunct car to cut the power. The local electricians showed up Friday afternoon, stayed until 8pm fixed everything, signed off on it, then BCHydro showed up about midnight and checked everything and the power was back on. Three cheers for you and your friends everywhere!

Notice how after Trump went to India recently, suddenly India allowed Amazon and Apple to operate in their country (literally a couple days later). There is definitely an alliance happening.

They just spent 6.2 right? Has anyone here looked into that to see exactly where that money went? I don’t know where it all went but I’m not going to pretend that if they had suspicions of the grid being at risk and had to put a plan together to fix it that they wouldn’t slide some of that money to companies who would be able mass produce whatever is needed. 'authority' to stop using foreign equipment or parts
to fix or update or otherwise install on the grid because---
every foreign country that makes parts for electrical
equipment is an "untrustworthy source".

If you have not noticed, U.S. manufacturing is not done
here anymore, it's produced outside our own country.

Information Technology expert here. Jake is right. The microchips can be manufactured in a way to allow back doors and vulnerabilities inside the hardware its self.

Software vulnerabilities are easy to patch, hardware vulnerabilities are very hard to get rid of.
