Why should anyone care? Well, they matter a lot more than most people would think. With summer upon us, it’s exciting to see the reemergence of some of our favorite produce, including stone fruit, peppers, sweet, juicy melons, and succulent strawberries. But what if the arrival of these crops each summer were to come to an end?

Honeybees, among other pollinators such as bats, birds, butterflies, and bumblebees, are responsible in one way or another for the pollination of approximately 100 crops, according to Dr. Reese Halter, Ph.D., author of The Incomparable Honeybee and distinguished conservation biologist. And they’re not just the fruits of summer; imagine a Thanksgiving, for example, without sweet potatoes or pumpkin pie.

However, the implications of the disappearance of honeybees are not just gastronomic; they are also economic in scope, and in that respect, the scale is significant. According to the National Resources Defense Council (NRDC),

more than $15 billion worth of crops are pollinated by bees each year just in the United States alone. Put another way, one of every three bites of food Americans consume comes from a plant visited by bees or other pollinators.

Soooo...how the hell did they simultaneously show up in both the UK and the US, coming from Asia??

maybe somebody relaesed them to attack bees, meaning American crops & food

A guy brought one to work in a zip lock baggie last week ... here in Tennessee ... the thing was between a inch and a inch and a half long and a weird darker orange color ... said He encountered it in His woodshop ...

do these mfs have any natural predators? guess some lizards and birds feed on them, but they have to be big and "immune" for it

That guy is gonna hunt Murder Hornets with a pistol loaded with rat shot because "Ya can't carry a blow torch around with you everywhere."

Does wasp/hornet spray not work on the Murder Hornets for some reason? You could carry that around with you as easily as a pistol, at least, if you were that anxious about it.

In fact, assuming it does work, we need to get this problem rounded up quickly before it gets out of control. I propose everyone get an industrial size can of Raid and use this quarantine time productively and go on a nationwide Murder Hornet genocide spree. We could all use some stress relief, anyway. Since we can't hunt viruses, let's all take it out on the Murder Hornets. State governments could put a bounty on them like they do with nutria in Louisiana or pythons in Florida if people need encouragement.
