People w/bad thyroids: What if we run out of Levothyroxine due to supply chain breaks?
Question for the scientists/doctors out there.

Any advice on what we people that don't have thyroids (or malfunctioning ones) do if we run out of levothyroxine (supply chain issues).

I've searched & searched online to no avail for natural substitutes, i.e. pig hormones (still need a prescription) etc. and can't find anything I can stockpile.

My doctor will will not let me get an extra prescription to set aside in case of emergency which I think is BS considering I'm stable with my daily dose (I'm not the local drug dealer, but maybe I should make friends with one huh?).

Biology isn't my strong point, are there any knowledgeable people online that could advise anon.?

In a hypothetical life/death situation (before falling into coma from lack of hormones) are there any natural (beside pig hormones) substitutes? Or any other animal thyroid glands that could be used to produce something that would at least keep you alive for awhile.

Any help appreciated, and thanks for all replies.

Your doctor will probably write a 90 day supply right now, then order some dedicated thyroid off Ebay.

I've had no thyroid since 2012 and asked the doctor on the first visit how to get extra meds

Why would fluoride be added to our water if eu-thyroid-ness was an objective, or even allowed ?

Do hope you get some helpful answers though.

I hear a lot of people saying T3 are a great help, I have hypothyroid suffered now for 3 years, totally miserable and feel unwell unfortunately in Scotland they don’t test for T3 nor will you get them, I’m so sad and feel I’m slowly dying and probably am so glad some are feeling better it gives abit of hope, we don’t get T 3 because it’s too expensive. My weight has increased by 3 stone, and now have fybromyalga, vit D deficiency, anemia, planter fascitis and higher blood pressure, before I was sporty active happy loved life, now isolated in pain can barely walk always tired can’t stand noise and bright lights can’t go out in sunshine, what an existance,

A bad Thyroid is mostly due to immune system attacks. Most immune system attacks are due to Modern Gluten Protein.

Stop eating Gluten. Period.

I know, I have no T3 and I have these problems too as well as a bum foot that's been reconstructed to the best of the Dr.s ability (couldn't have ankle replacement due to the damage to rest of foot, long story about 35 years ago).

Lucky I still have the foot I guess and can hobble around (therapists said amputation might be better, uhh no, not going there) but then add in the CRPS (nerve damage, chronic high level pain/spasms) on top of the thyroid issues and fused neck, and yeah...

I used to be super active too, working, swimming, riding (had to rehome my beloved horses), working around my little farmette...now I'm reduced to small raised garden (my husband does the in-ground stuff) my dogs, and in-house stuff on one level, me and stairs don't get along well.

Biggest concern really is what happens if the meds run out.
And you're right the lack of T3 just makes it all worse!

Hang tough friend, that's all we can do.

I know that now, but I had my thyroid removed (I was hyperactive originally) and all I have left are 2 parathyroids. Dr. accidentally removed the bottom two because they didn't know my thyroid was as big/inflamed/bleeding as it was when they went in to remove it due to very large goiter(s) plural (that they did biopsy and ultrasound) but I couldn't stabilize on drugs & they were afraid it was about to turn cancerous...anyway, because of the size, inflammation & bleeding, surgeon accidentally removed the bottom two. I only have two parathyroids left.
Thank you for info. though!

That is great for people with simple hypo... however people with immune systems attaching the thyroid is not a result of low iodine or selenium etc... its your own immune system working its damage on the thyroid...

Ask your Dr. to prescribe you double the amount you need and break it in half daily. That will give you twice as long for the same amount of $$$.

First, read this article which tells you a work-around for possibly obtaining a several month supply of your regular thyroid meds: [link to survivalblog.com (secure)]

I discussed this issue with a friend who had her thyroid removed, suggesting that she try to obtain a back-up supply of meds due to possible shortages. She told me she takes Armour thyroid medicine which is made in USA, and her pharmacist recently informed her that there is a huge supply of it, and since it is a natural product and made in USA, there is very little likelihood of them ever running out.

Re: People w/bad thyroids: What if we run out of Levothyroxine due to supply chain breaks?
A while back I ran out when I was between doctors. I was able to purchase online. The money end of it was in the UK. I think the meds came from India. Over $3 per pill, but worth it, considering the alternative.

I recently filled a 90 day for Synthroid. Co-pay was $90. I need to switch to generic.

I am also experimenting with no-A/low-A diet which by definition is gluten free as bread and all grains are discouraged. There is evidence that vitamin A toxicity is linked to auto-immune problems. Hashimoto's is auto-immune, so I am hoping to see thyroid benefits from the no-A/low-A.

I have Hashimoto's disease and I take 75mcg of Levothyroxine daily. I guess if worse comes to worst, I can go to Mexico to get thyroid meds. (We live only a few hours from the border). I agree with the statement that the "War on Drugs" has been waged at the expense of people who legitimately need pain medication, muscle relaxers, Sudafed, etc. Many doctors, because of the Opioid Act, require drug tests for THC before they will prescribe any psychiatric drugs. In our state, medical marijuana is legal. I left my psychiatrist who treats me for panic disorder/PTSD because of the stupid mandatory THC tests. Fortunately, not all doctors interpret the law so strictly. Sorry, I got on a rant.

Iodine is not recommended for people with Hashimoto's.

Gluten free is probably good, though it might actually be the glyphosate in grains that is causing the problems.

I am a couple of months into a no-A/low-A diet, which is by default very low in grains. Hoping to see some improvement of auto-immune issues.

They dont use liothyronine in the UK too expensive £6,000 per person per year so if your T3 is low (which is most people with thyroid problems) tough $h*t

Btw if you are exhausted all the time for no obvious reason liothyronine is the answer

Does the Thyrovanz contain thyroxine? I've found that several of the "glandular extracts" and "natural thyroid" products don't actually contain the active hormone. Most will say on the label that they are "thyroxine-free" when the product doesn't contain it, but not all of them reveal this.
