"The coronavirus pandemic forced the federal government to spend nearly $1 trillion in April alone, a massive increase from any other month in the last two years, according to new numbers released this week.

In a highlight of the new report, the Treasury Department wrote that the increase of spending from its agency by $604.4 billion from last April to this April is 'largely due to the release of assistance related to the COVID-19 outbreak.

In April 2019, the Treasury Department spent $375.2 billion, and last month it spent $979.7 billion as economic assistance for Americans laid out in several pieces of legislation went into effect.

When taking into account the spending and receipts received by the Treasury, it is nearly $750 billion in the red for the month of April.

Treasury only spent $355.7 billion in March, the month when the realities of the threat of coronavirus began to hit the U.S. – $623.9 billion less than the following month."
