gun ownership (of handguns) in Canada is illegal. In order to get a long gun you must prove you need it, and from what I've read, not even having bears about is considered a need, they suggest you use bear mace. Good luck.

In order to get a long gun license, you need a clean criminal record, a few references, and a certificate of completion of a gun safety course.
If you are recently divorced or separated, you need a reference from your ex.
I got around this one by telling the ex that I might want to go prospecting in grizzly country to fulfill my child support obligations.
Although I was in the infantry, I still found the gun safety course worthwhile and informative.
Long guns include almost all semi-automatics including M-1's. SKS's, and semi-auto versions of the M-16/AR-15/Armalite family as well as the CZ-858 which looks a lot like an AK-47 but ejects out the top like an SKS.
The CZ-858 is sold with 30 bullet magazines but they have pop rivets installed at the 5 bullet mark.
The only gun which can be sold with a 10 bullet magazine is the bolt action WWI/II Lee-Enfield 303.
Pistol enthusiasts can purchase pistols and transport them by the most direct route between their home and a certified shooting range. A restricted weapons permit is needed to own a pistol. Carry permits are much harder to get.

Gun stores in Alberta carry a wide selection of pistols and a few automatic weapons like the AK-47. There were a lot of pistol enthusiasts where I used to live in the Northwest Territories so I know that pistol licenses can't be that hard to get.
Obviously some people can still purchase AK-47's.

For US residents (as of a few years ago) there is a traveling rv that goes to places in the US giving the test for a license. That is how I got mine. If you talk to him he may make a special trip to an area near you. It was easy to pass;) If you have any plans to go north, you may want to do this.

That's what it's called PAL= Posession & Acquisition License.
It used to be called an FAC (Firearms Acquisition Certificate).

I live in Florida. The only "test" required here is for a Concealed carry permit, where one must demonstrate proficiency with a firearm. There is nothing, other than a criminal background check, required to purchase a firearm here.

Unregistered guns are illegal in Canada. Period.

The system is set up to deny criminals and dumb fucks access to firearms. Google "Canadian Firearms Center" to get info on the "Non-Restricted" long gun course. If you want to hunt, there is another course you will have to take called "Hunter's Safety" to get any licence. Call your local gunshop to find out who is teaching it in your area.
