My girlfriend cant sleep, dont want pills. Tried valarian root and kratom. Doesnt work. Any herbalists got something to knock her out.

We buy small doses of xanax sometimes off the street. That knocks her out. We dont like that or want script drugs.

CBD oil is supposed to help. (Never tried it myself.)

A day with enough physical exertion and you won't have any problems falling asleep.

I can see that you have no understanding of insomnia.

It is an inability to turn off the mind.

Magnesium Chloride helps a bit.

Magnesium plus Melatonin helps a lot but I need to sleep for 10 hours or I feel like I'm in slow motion for a few hours in the morning. But not all the time, just after a few days of taking it so I'm wondering of Melatonin builds up or something.

Is she overweight? Does she smoke? Do drugs? Drink alcohol daily/frequently?

If you answer yes to more than 2 of these, there is always the possibilty she has a bad liver. People with a poorly functioning liver do not sleep well.

I ain't found any.

If you go the big pharma route, then you'll get some sleep, but you'll need them forever.

Ambien is better than Lunesta.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 77896303

Ya, we are looking for something natural that makes you sleep like ambien.

My buddy has a script for that. Best sleep we both have had. We both have had drug use problems in the past. Clean now. Trying to stay off big pharma. Been searching awhile.

Melatonin kibda works for her. Cept she has bad nightmares on it, still wakes up sometimes.

Re: Need an herbal supplement to help an insomniac.
Herbal teas like chamomile will help:

[link to www.puritan.com (secure)]

If she can't sleep because she can't get her thoughts to calm down then focus on meditation and see if that helps.

Disconnect from all electronics at least 1 hr before bed time.

Never watch TV from your bed. You bed should only be for sleep and related activities ;)

Make sure all "blue" light is out of your room. Maybe get an eye mask to wear at night if there's to much light.

White noise generator or a good box fan might help.

Lower the temperature of the room to below 70, like as low as 65.

There are "heavy" blankets that you can try:

[link to www.amazon.com (secure)]

If none of that is helping, see a sleep doctor. She might not be breathing properly at night which can be a very serious issue if not addressed. There are non-drug therapies for that.

Excellent. What do you think about indica marijuana strain for insomnia?

Ambien and the likes, while effective, just have too many unintended consequences even when used properly.

The problem with these drugs is that if a person snores or has sleep apnea they can be dangerous. They will put you in such a deep sleep that you might not wake up if you quit breathing when you are sleeping. That's why many doctors prescribe the (antidepressants) drugs that have sleeping side effects and which just help you fall/stay asleep such as Trazadone and Doxepin.

diphenhydramine works, but has also been indicated in long-term health issues such as dementia and brain shrinkage. Not sure I would want to use it regularly.

Hot bath with Epsom salts (magnesium) to go to sleep.

I diffuse lavender and frankincense essential oils to stay asleep.

Rub a couple drops into the insole of your feet too.

Couple puffs off a Doobie never hurt anyone.

Good piece of ass helps tremendously.

I sympathize. I've been struggling with this for the last two years, ever since going through serious stress associated with my divorce on top of going through menopause. Does she have a FitBit by any chance? If so, have her look at her oxygen saturation while sleeping. If there are large or frequent spikes, she is probably having issues with breathing at night that are waking her and then she cannot get back to sleep.

Things I've tried in the past:
kick pets out of bed
softer mattress
sour cherry juice
chamomile tea
diphenhydramine (Benadryl)
various herbal blend capsules
magnesium
melatonin
Trazodone (rx)
Doxepin (rx)
exercise later in the day
do not eat after 8 or just a late night warm milk
white noise
cooler temps
red wine

(I can't take Ambien because I stop breathing at night and it is dangerous). The best I have found is the Doxepin, which is a side-use sleep aid but originally an antidepressant (but non-habit-forming). I just take 1/2 only as needed, such as when I have a lot to do at work or meetings the next day. Otherwise, the white noise, cooler temps, and exercising later in the day, and a late night warm milk work the best for me along with magnesium. Sometimes people will wake in the middle of the night if their stomachs are empty, which is why the late night milk seems to work for me. I also started to take liver health and cortisol stress supplements as I think the extreme stress I went through probably gave me some adrenal fatigue and it's always better to treat the underlying problem than just a bandage for the symptom. i.e. why I am exercising more, eating better, and taking the supplements.

Classic signs of a bad liver imo. Sad that you won't go and have it checked out but instead do a bunch of things like smoking weed, taking xanax and herbal supps that will only make it worse. She needs to immediately change her diet & do a liver cleanse/detox and then go see a GI doc.

I buy anise seed in bulk. I use just a little by pouring boiling water on.Tastes great. Good to experiment with a few pieces first, because it is quite effective.
Also try tea instead of the morning coffee it can make sleep hard even much later, if she likes it strong.
