Quoting: GSB/LTD I have a 100% cotton, USA-made 6'x9' flag dead hung in front of my townhouse. It hangs from 7am-10pm and after dusk it's back lit with a couple of spotlights. In past years, my neighbors have taken their holiday pictures in front of it and one 4th of July a group of young German tourists driving by spotted it, pulled over and excitedly did the same thing. That was the year I added a boombox [that word tells you how OLD I am!] playing John Philip Sousa marches. And you know what? Watching them do that damned-near made me cry. |

GSB/LTD (OP) User ID: 8080014 United States 05/25/2020 09:41 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I'm not because it's raining. If the flag had been flying, I'd have gone out and taken it in. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 77504359 But some dude just sped down my street with a beaten up flag flying from the back of his mudded-up truck - does that count? It's OKAY to fly one in the rain as long as it's made of an all-weather material. After all, do you think all battles were fought only when the sun was shining? Older flags were usually made of silk for durability and fast-drying, but today most are made of Nylon or Polyester and all too often[!] in China. As I said, mine is 100% cotton so it hangs from a protected eve on my front porch. A good thing since it's raining here, too. Last Edited by GSB/LTD on 05/25/2020 09:46 AM |
GSB/LTD (OP) User ID: 8080014 United States 05/25/2020 09:46 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | It's raining in my area. Quoting: SouthSide Not supposed to put out a flag when the weather is bed. Sadly... Not true. Flag etiquette states that you can fly in bad weather... but it's also discouraged because of the wear/tear it has on the flag itself. It's also suggested that you light our flag if it is flying in foul weather. Except for that, the weather actually has little to do with honoring our national symbol because it's supposed to fly over us during good times/bad and rain/shine. RIGHT? I don’t celebrate that. Quoting: 3643297 I think you're missing the point. Like you, I'm strongly anti-war. I was one of those arrogant young punks who burned his draft card during VietNam. Back then I thought I was making a statement and perhaps I was. But today? Not so much. Actually, if drafted I would've served in a non-action capacity such as the Ministry, but with my high lottery number it was a moot point. Eventually I became a civil servant and retired from federal service 8 years ago. I've seen too many soldiers willingly march off into battle to protect "moral" people like myself and usually for things in which I did NOT believe or support. But that IN NO WAY diminished their willingness to serve our country. And for that and much, much more I totally respect them both living and dead. But -of course- you are FREE to think/speak/do as you wish. Once in awhile, just try to remember why you can. Last Edited by GSB/LTD on 05/25/2020 10:14 AM |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 9612981 United States 05/25/2020 10:05 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | The wife and I will be walking across the St. Croix River bridge today carrying my dad's (large) flag from his funeral. I found a tall pole to accommodate the large flag. It is hard to miss. The flag was presented to my mother and I inherited it. It sat in it's package folded up for years and I decided a few years ago it should be put to good use. My dad would like that. It is so much fun because hundreds of cars and trucks honk their horn when they see the American flag. I have great videos of the crossing we try to do a couple of times a year. The truckers repeated loud horn blasts are the best. Boats also honk. The only thing stopping us will be rain. I understand taps will be played across the country at 3 p.m. I hope we are out on the bridge for taps. Wouldn't be cool if a trumpeter was there too. |

In case that term is unfamiliar, it means to hang a flag vertically [as on a stage] with the star field to the upper left. And, in most of those little flag kits you buy at your local ACE hardware store, the poles are only about 5' long; with a typical 3'x5' flag it's impossible to fly it at half-staff. For a flag my size I'd need a 45' pole to hang it properly. |

But -of course- you are FREE to think/speak/do as you wish. This subject is one of the most hotly argued in our countries history. I think it comes down to a definition of the macro vs. the micro. On a macro scale, you don't look at the individual and their inadequacies but rather a protective force as a whole. On a micro level, there have certainly been deception to coerce us into conflicts. I think it's akin to taking a stance on the police. I don't support asshole cops that should never have gone into that profession, however as a whole, on the macro level, I support the thin blue line because the alternative is anarchy. You have to support the military on a macro level. Memorial day isn't about celebrating, but remembering and honoring those who sacrificed. You aren't celebrating war, you are honoring your fellow citizens that died in service. That is a distinct difference.
