Peculiar reactions lead to hilarious conclusions. I often wonder how a simple observation about an object in the sky can make public fools of so-called moderators. |

V User ID: 301206 United States 09/21/2007 01:29 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Nothing is going on with Venus. No matter how many times people post that SOMETHING IS OGING ON WITH VENUS on GLP, anyone with an interest in Astronomy will tell you without b.s. that Venus goes through 'phases' much like the Moon from full to crescent (from our perspective) and at certain times it is BRILLIANTLY bright in the night sky, so much so that it can even be seen in the daytime under full sunlight. So, it's just part of the normal Astronomical cycles, and not a 'sign' of anything unusual or Abbey Normal. :) V |

It's not the first time I have seen Venus in the sky. It's not the first time I've ooked out of this wndow. I've been watching the stars from her for more than two decades. Venus is unusually bright. |

V User ID: 301206 United States 09/21/2007 01:53 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | OK. It's 'unusually bright' I can see it too, and I been watching the sky for at least that long too - but it's not SO unusually bright as to make it magical or mystical or whatever - it's just cyclical. And I post, because I am an Amateur Astronomer and can explain that it's not unusual. Venus right now is at about magnitude -4.4 That's QUITE BRIGHT. By way of contrast Jupiter which is also very bright in the early evening sky right now, is a mere -2.1 and the different in 4.4 and 2.1 isn't just a factor of 2x's....so....that's all I'm saying. Anonymous Coward User ID: 298413 Australia 09/21/2007 02:08 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Background stars would appear brigter too. They don't. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 300921I'm no expert but we've seen stars pulled (appeared to be pulled) from their position when the anomaly was by the sun, but they didn't get bigger. [link to www.godlikeproductions.com] If Planet X pulled Venus, or appeared to pull, Venus from its position on August 16 when it should have entered the SOHO C3 field but didn't, it could well be between Venus and the Earth now and affecting the light of Venus to make it look bigger (10X bigger than stars according to one poster). It's the same lensing effect as when the moon appears to be bigger when it is first rising over the horizon; the light of Venus must be passing through some matter or magnetic field of this anomaly to appear this big. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 255583 Canada 09/21/2007 02:13 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Yeah, soon people will start posting that the sun is too far south: "Just a few months ago the sun was farther north. OMG!! The sun is out of place" "I've been watching the sun for a couple of months and the sun is not where it should be" "I've never seen the sun so far south" These threads are as cyclical as the bright and dim, morning and evening phases of Venus. There is nothing unusual about Venus being so bright. Study the cycles of Venus. It is fascinating. The Mayas had the cycle down to perfection. The tables in the Dresden Codex still predict these cycles accurately, right down to the day. Nothing new under the sun. Venus is only doing what it always does at this point in the cycle, and it will do the same 584 days from now. |
