Quoting: Anonymous Coward 78879741 Yes. They want to tear it apart to the last nut, bolt and transistor to see if there's anything suspicious. Earlier, the Chinese hid nasty stuff in high-end server motherboards. [link to www.tomshardware.com (secure)] |

[link to www.tomshardware.com (secure)] My understanding is that China is essentially the only supplier in the world now for these large transformers. That is insane. The US should make it a law that all grid critical infrastructure should be sourced from domestic sources. I wonder just how compromised our grid has become. LoneStarRising |

I don't think there is consumer grade electronics in the world without at least a single China-made IC. I'll bet most of the military grade stuff is the same except perhaps for the most critical and sensitive applications where total paranoia reigns supreme (as it should). |

What triggered this action I wonder? There is nothing more critical to daily life than our grid. "US President Donald Trump on 1 May signed an executive order for the DoE to find and ban devices from the power grid made by foreign countries that were considered a threat to national security." All thanks to our regulatory agencies, making transformers like this in America is a losing proposition. Therefore they are made in China. Now you know the purpose of the EPA, OSHA, etc. - drive manufacturing out of the States. This decision was made in the late 1960's to push America into being a breadbasket and center for high tech development. Traditional manufacturing and steel production was to be forced out of the country. |

China owns 99% of the world's resources of rare-earth metals. It seems pretty clear to me that 15-20 years ago the Chinese woke up and said "We're not going to sell this stuff to anyone any more. If you want it, come and build your factories here in China and employ Chinese workers and we'll sell you the stuff you need - but only for what you produce here." Thus, all the electronic stuff we buy is made in China only. |
