I'll also opine that the NG is very useful for natural disasters and keeping security in a specific region during a disaster.

I say this having been an active Marine and also a NG reservist.

The NG is good for security, i.e. preventing normally decent people from taking advantage of a situation to loot/cause chaos in a show of force (i.e. locks keep honest people honest).

This situation is already beyond that. Giving the NG rifles with live rounds would only lead to disaster. They are not trained for that type of situation, and have a much lower training and competency level than active duty soldiers. I've seen it first hand, you don't want these people pointing guns at an unruly crowd.

However, if the agents provocateur keep pushing the violence, looting, and attacks against the cops and citizens there won't be much of a choice. Trump (as with COVID) is allowing the Governors/Mayors to handle their own business (which is the constitutionally correct thing to do), but if those blue governors and mayors keep allowing the riots to happen with no repurcussions for the rioters, then his hand will be forced.
