Police officer tells my wife to get a gun

My wife called the local precinct today to ask a few questions about the gifting of a gun.
My MIL went out and purchased a hand gun for her, so she could carry it to work.
She works in a decent area of the city but does have some crazies who loom around.
He explained the rules and said just to seperate the ammo and gun when transporting until she gets her concealed permit.
He asked, are you getting a gun because of whats going on?
She said yes. He said good, I'm advising almost any person who asks my opinion, go get one, today, not tomorrow.
Things are so bad, the last thing you want to do is not have protection while waiting for the police to arrive.
Thing are going to get bad, worse that what they are now. You need to have something that will protect you and your family.
He ended the call by telling her to remain vigilant and stay safe.
