The short & scientific answer.. the generation spent and the genre fused with industry pop.

The long answer.. progenitors of a genre feed off each other and a genre blazes... industry pop swallows the genre, fans migrate with the new sound, progenitors burn out and purist fans are left with spent fires, locked in a time capsule.

When pop music adopts a genre, it antiquates the pure forms. The pure forms don't vanquish, they exists as lit coals, ready to light fires in new fusions of genres.

Same can be said for soul, blues, folk, etc.

Rock music is whole other can of worms.

every generation has its music ( Rap / Hip Hop isnt music, its poetry). All music is Alive and All music is dead at the same time. What ever sells is what is popular and promoted, Punk ran its course to give way to angry black poetry ( rap)as they could make a shit ton of money from naive and stupid white kids.

Im 55 also. Great punk scene in Chicago before it went completly to shit.
Exit, O'banyons- Misfits, Hellhouse- it was SO exciting at the time.

There are multiple reason why punk is not what is was anymore.
Every style of music has its day and punk rock is over 50 years old, its original shock and danger value that it was based on is no longer there. Musically it is a limited style so not much originality comes from it these days, also it has been watered down over the years by commercial record companies milking it into user friendly pop music. Music these days is mostly recorded digitally so the raw sound of punk recorded today loses the warmth it had back in the analogue days.

The genre of punk rock will continue but perhaps in the way it was meant to: as an underground movement.

It’s alive and well around here. My daughter who is in her 20’s plays bass and sings in a punk band. They play all over the state as well as several other states. Just recorded an album.
