A root cellar of some kind would be useful, but the issue is being buried by drifts. That maintains a 55 F (12.8 C) inner temp to minimize firewood use, so food caloric intake is not as high. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 78531648 United States 07/10/2020 05:19 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I'm less than impressed with the shelters! This is winter in the arctic and one guy still has a tarp flapping in the breeze...after a month! Quoting: Mental Case The stone fireplace & chimney was good but the rest of her shelter was unsatisfactory! Unless somebody gets serious about a shelter I can't see a single one of them making it 100 days. I think Roland gonna win this. change my pick. Amos will win. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 69688918 United States 07/10/2020 06:26 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | All indigenous people by the time the gardening diminishes with autumn final crops, then collect nuts and whatever berries are left. Then animals are mature as are fish, so harvesting runs of them before they wise up and get scarce. The problem with Alone is it's unnatural. No indigenous people would be just starting shelters that late. Plus, your got issues with firewood "seasoning" so it burns with the maximal BTUs produced. Alone iscreated to induce suffering and deprivation to create an unnatural conflict in a short amount of time. It'ssupposed to emulate a situation where one is homeless and trying to rapidly adapt without the benefit of a tribe, shaman, and chief. That might happen in history if braves went on a last hunting party and then got attacked, thus seperated from the tribe. A lot of goofy people arrive and are too thin. Instead, tribe members would pack on calories so they had fat reserves. They also would have some big game they caught and dressed and converted to some kind of pemmican. One hunter by themselves trying to take large game, butcher it hygenically, and preserving it, is quite difficult. Only once has that happened on the show (last season). I think it was Callie who got the porcupine. Good for her as that was a small but significant mass of meat and fat. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 69688918 United States 07/10/2020 06:33 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | An inadequately insulated sheter in the Far North with the wind chill as any deciduous trees lose their leaves, or in a valley with few windbreaks, and you would get frostbite. You would lose the ends of your nose, the tips of your ears and fingers and toes. All these silly "builds"! You make tools in the evening doing the "coarse" work by firelight, and "fine" work by daylight. You never burn daylight! That is insane when they should be cutting firewood like crazy. Already the snow accumuated at day 28. Imagine how hard it is to take dead wood down in the snow. That is nuts. All these overly complex projects with dovetail joints are absurd. We get that some have carpentry ability but they need food preserved and isulated shelters and firewood and storing water vessels. They are "entertaining" instead of surviving and thriving. |

You could also use it to bait a bear as you wait in a tree with your bow. If I am going to be damned...I am going to be damned for who I really am! |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 69688918 United States 07/10/2020 07:07 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | They never show "de-scenting" either. Good luck being stinky and trying to take large game. Good luck being stinky and trapping. Animals aren't dumb. You maintain hygiene. You keep clothes in a bag with soil in it. You could apply a pine need wash to "de-scent" the oils on your hands. Being "funky" and trying to take a bear is crazy. He or she will smell you when the wind shifts. You use whatever fragrant plants are around to mask your scent. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 69688918 United States 07/10/2020 07:19 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Every time you go to fetch water in winter, you risk injury. You have a problem as the humidity is low so whatever you gather wicks away by the dry air. But you got to collect some in likely earthen casks or one day hauling water which is very heavy, you take a tumble and maybe into the lake. That really makes no sense. Gathering just a pan of water will ultimately lead to be dehydrated especially in low humidity winter situations. Some take snow in cloth bundles and it's warmer in the shelter so it drips and you drink that snowmelt. Snow has very little water content versus what people presume as an inch of rain equals 7-8 inches of snow. You could waste a lot of firewood trying to do active snowmelting. Evergreen trees have low BTUs but are resinous so burn hot briefly. That is why they catch easier. But if taking an old standing dead wood evergreen tree, then you need way more firewood. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 69688438 United States 07/17/2020 05:30 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | It's great to see big game taken down. This is the second time as the moose.last season was the first. A musk ox has little fat so that ain't so great. Human metablism limits the intake of protein and any excess is removed by the kidneys or else you get proteinura and it can cause kidney issues. The survivor tries eating more but to zero effect. Lipolysis is induced as their blood sugar is low so caloric intake is low so guconeogenesis begins. |

Ordinarily these are unusual medical issues seen in patients with diabetes. ... That was not an ethical kill and so while it was remarkable as there was an arrow issue, taking 5 hours for an animal to perish and havig to repeatedly create deep stabs to induce severe blood loss is cruel. That causes the animal to release adreneline and cortisol and it "taints" the meat alttering the flavor. Some Native people like that taste but most do not. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 69688438 United States 07/17/2020 05:43 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | He should have built a travois at night and pulled the sled with the meat on it. Alaskan tribes cut a hole in the ice, run a rope down and attach a net and open a second ice hole, and yank the net out the opposite side to net up the fish. I hope he tries that as that would get him large fat bearing fish, providing calories he can use to outlast everyone else. |

That is what bakers want to render as lard. The musk ox had little fat which surprised me but buffalo/bison is the same way. Thatmeans the meat is easy to "jerk" but means he can't make pemmican. Did you notice the lady on the boat is having electrolyte issues as she is low salt consumption? She is getting cramping. You can eat the eyeballs to get some saltiness, but t ain't much. One could try draining blood and or mixing like German blood sausage with any meat as well. |

It was long into it...and now he was stuck in his shelter for 3 solid days because of a storm...and he said... "it's times like this that you really better like yourself or you're never going to make it". Beware of people who always need people around them. It simply means they know who they really are & cannot stand to be alone with their own self. |
