Thank you. I love that show. If was 40 years younger, I would apply for next season.

I have to admit when bows became standard equipment I lost a bit of interest.
Canada's far north is best explored when sitting on the seat of a D7 bulldozer. Behind you are 3 atco trailers on skies that is your camp. The better operator of the two pull the fuel sleigh as that is the most valuable sleigh of them all. Build an airstrip on a frozen lake when running low. We had a reason for being there. Tourism for the hardy when you cover 1,000 miles on skidoos as the camp moves from campsite to campsite.

There was another series, Colonly, 20 people in an abandoned industrial center and they all worked together to build one shelter for all of them. Filling tires with clothes was pretty stupid. Cement is the material of choice as long as it is 100 filled

I said this in other thread

During the zoom interviews, Roland in confident and lost a lot of weight, his watch. So I think he wins. Very humble guy in beginning, but he has a million dollar swag about him, now.

Also the big brown hair girl must go out soon. She looks the same size in the zoom interview. So she must leave early, did not lose much weight.
While she was dreaming what’s her and her husband would do with the money. Roland was preparing and living with the Eskimos, lol.

The skinny guy with curly hair. He always looks so mad and defensive stance in the zoom interview. He must come in second. That is why he is so mad looking.

I wanted Roland to win since the beginning. Seems like a really good guy, really needs the money, and just lost his mother.

One of the better seasons. I still have not watched tonight’s episode.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 78347381

Now...Roland is the guy from el salvador who grew up in a civil war...correct?

I kinda like him too. But I also like the dark haired girl (kaylyn or something like that).
 Quoting: Mental Case

No silly, that is Amos

Roland is the big guy who built the rock cave and took out the musk ox. The zoom interview his watch keeps falling off, and he is confident looking.

Forgot about the Mexican, Amos. But I think he runs out of food. He does not look that skinny in the interview. So he probably is third or fourth place. I think he is the guy making the hole in the frozen lake..

I assume the blonde girl gets the frostbite on her toes. So she is third or fourth.

The big brunette girl taps out next.

Skinny curly guy is second, he looks so pissed in the interview. Lol. He looks like a dickhead anyways.

Alaskan Roland wins. He deserves it.

My guesss

Skinny curly guy? Only 4 remain. Roland, amos, callie (blonde), and kielyn (brunette)

There is such a serious need for fat...I wonder if any of them remember that pine nuts have oils in them. They should be eating some along with their bunnies.

It says my guesses

And in my previous post, (not within above reply), I already said I did not watch last night episode yet.

In all of the previous episodes, during the zoom interviews. The skinny curly dark haired guy, always looks so so pissed, and extra skinny, so I assume he came in second.

But now you said something, he must be the guy who they keep showing in the intro , that falls, by the lake. I would not want to see him win anyways, he looks like a dickhead in the interviews.

Skinny guys will never win.

I say again, all my guesses.

They are already at day 44...Imagine how hard it would be to live in the woods for 44 days.

Feeding yourself, building a shelter...fire wood etc etc etc...

I do not understand why they all keep cutting fire wood, that is a lot of calories and work. I just feed the logs into the fire, even in a shelter. I have very large bonfires in spring doing forest clean up. Even in a large fire you have to keep feeding the poles, the fire only burns in the center coals, unless you have a lot of fuel, dry grass and branches down the log, even then the logs go out unless you have them on coals.

It's likely due to generating sufficient heat release using chopped wood versus just feeding the ends.

If the average temperature is 14 deg F during the day, do you really think you can just feed log ends and stay warm enough?

You got to realize that you're stuck between that and too vigorous a fire as their whole shelters save Roland's is FLAMMABLE.

Mr. Expert Carpenter started out too skinny and too FUSSY and so never even made a proper shelter. It was pathetic. He must have been shivering all the time.

Why in the world would anyone show up for day #1 in a lean state? That doesn't make a lick of sense.

Re: "ALONE" Starts Tonight
I liked having smaller pieces for building coals and getting my cooking coals just right. I would snap my wood for that. Raise one end braced on a log or rock and hit it on the low side. I would also break down longer pieces by sticking it between two close trees and pulling back would snap it easy. I could break down a lot of wood fast and easy like that.

When chopping down a tree fast you want a wide V cut, Start your lower half of the V on the bottom side first so you get full swing going up and then go at the upper cut down.

All that is faster and easier than sawing.

Every single one of them is facing rabbit starvation as protein metabolism is low in calories (1/2 of fat) and yet all of them have hypoglycemia so throwing off ketone bodies.

You should arrive FAT and it's little know but they all bring a small amount of emergency rations. They showed that two seasons ago. So a smart participant would bring sugar so blood sugar was maintained so lipolysis can happen instead of muscle wasting.

A Native American would use acorns (with tannins removed) to be modulating their diet by adding fat every day.

Sugar and salt are my main paranoid hoard items that I would never want to be without. Milk would be my personal next.

I think the guy that had to drop out last week due to leg and foot pain was suffering from gout caused by a diet of trout, greens and berries, not starvation. It does it to me on a good day. He needed to add seeds.

For me, my #1 priority for a shelter is southern exposure. You need to be able to get in every bit of sun shine when ever possible in the winter. I will often sun bath in my birthday suit when it is below freezing on a sunny day.

Mylar would also be one of my major survival tool choices.

Not so much mistakes, just always room for improvement, always more to learn.

I hope you get the chance to try it on your own in the woods soon before you get much older. Old bones on the cold hard ground is not good. I wish I could take out and show you around the NW Mountains and let you have at it for a few months. You would love it.

This is a self-feeding log fire but imagine trying rig up one in a little shelter with long logs when it's below zero degrees F at night plus windchill.

Re: "ALONE" Starts Tonight
Mosquito juice. Take three mosquitoes and put them in a glass of water for three days, shake gently a few times a day. Remove them after three days then take about tablespoon each day in your water. You will not taste it. Works for other biting insects too. You will not have a bad reaction when you do get bit and use caution to protect yourself during peak bug hours, dusk and dawn.

Other things help too, bug spray, electronic sound wave devices, have a noseeum net. I have a full body net so I do not have to wear full heavy duty clothing in heat when out working. It was only about $25 and durable, holds up to hard work. Avon skin so soft rubbed on in the sweat lodge would work for days after without the deet. Vanilla helps a little. The skeeter juice is most important when all else fails.

A small opening in the shelter to allow the wood to feed from both sides is not a big deal and a lot less work. Try it some time. You will need to adjust the height so they get air. You can make something to stop the draft around the opening and still feed the logs. Or make a more complicated rocket stove, they feed on long logs also.

Why they don't build their shelters around the chimney like Roland did is kind of puzzling, and making a shelter that would accommodate a long fire would be too logical I guess, bed on one side, drying racks on the other.

And speaking of hides, he should have cooked down his brains first to skim off the lanolin. His gloves are going to stink LOL.

We already know who gets frostbite and you think the solution is to make longer shelters that will accommodate long log fires is the answer.

OK. Try it Hoss. Do a youtube video in freezing coldnand without burning down the shelter as well.
