I've spent a large portion of my life near reservations. In fact, I've been living within half a mile of one for the past 17 years.

Indians are NOT innately more violent than anyone else. Sadly, they DO have a genetic twist that causes them to process alcohol in such a way that alcoholism is more of a danger to them, however.

I have nothing but respect for Native Americans as a people. When I did my 23 and Me, I was as disappointed not having any N.A. blood as I was relieved at not having any African. In both cases, zero point zero. Obviously the zero N.A. was surprising.

Native American law enforcement officers are some of the best I've ever met. They make GREAT cops, in fact. Their situational awareness is quite good, their ability to de-escalate is top-notch, and their thoroughness and attention to detail unsurpassed.

Historically, N.A.s have been treated every bit as poorly (in some cases, worse) than African Americans, but they have almost never acted out like the current crop of protesters (black and white) have. In fact, every opportunity they have been given to try and make up for their past ill-treatment, they have made use of (think Casinos and tax-free enterprise zones).

Remember, an officer has a small fraction of a second to evaluate the situation and respond. The point about the flash is a great one. Most officers have never been fired upon, so they have no experience evaluating exactly what has been discharged at them.

What most civilians don't realize is, that a cop's training tells them that when a subject fires on a police officer, that very action puts the subject on a different level than one just being questioned. Any subject who is willing to run, turn and discharge a weapon at a cop, is showing there is very little they WON'T do to avoid capture. That's why officers HAVE to take extraordinary measures to render that subject unable to escape and potentially kill someone.
