Trump is having a rally for students in Phoenix on Tuesday Trump to campaign in Arizona as COVID cases climb. Students for Trump announced that President Trump is planning to speak at their convention in Phoenix on June 23. But that visit comes as COVID-19 cases have climbed in recent days across the battleground state, with local health officials urging residents to avoid the very type of large indoor gatherings the president's visit will likely involve. "While any president has a right to visit our great city, it is very worrisome that this president will visit and have a rally as our state is seeing an increase in COVID-19 cases," Phoenix Councilwoman Debra Stark told CBS News in a statement. Stark, a Democrat, represents the area where the convention will be held. Students for Trump is a project of the conservative organization Turning Point Action and is not directly affiliated with the president's campaign. An organizer with the group said thousands were expected to attend the president's "address to young Americans" from across the country, which will also be streamed to satellite locations. The Trump campaign did not respond to a request for comment. The president's remarks are slated to take place on the campus of Phoenix mega-church Dream City Church, which touts a "6,500-seat auditorium, one of the largest sanctuaries in America" in a biography of its senior pastor. Turning Point Action did not disclose any details on how organizers planned to address coronavirus concerns. The Trump campaign has also not yet announced whether it will require COVID-19 liability waivers from speech attendees, after the campaign required COVID-19 waivers for those will be going to the president's upcoming campaign rally in Oklahoma. While Phoenix has seen specific outbreaks of the disease, health officials warn community spread has also driven much of the recent surge in cases. [link to www.cbsnews.com (secure)] |

Trump is having a rally for students in Phoenix on Tuesday Well, it wasn’t exactly the highly touted one million people who descended on Tulsa to rally ‘round President Donald Trump. In fact, he couldn’t even fill the 19,000-seat arena — the Tulsa Fire Department estimated that fewer than 6,200 attended — and an outside stage set up where he would address the “overflow” crowd was quickly and quietly disassembled. You know what that means. We’re in for it, Arizona. Doesn’t matter that we are presently the nation’s hotspot for COVID-19. Doesn’t matter that some restaurants are re-closing amid a resurgence of the highly contagious virus. Doesn’t matter that hospitalizations are up or that most Arizonans now must wear masks wherever we go in a desperate attempt to get this virus under control and avoid needless deaths or any further economic devastation. Doesn’t even matter that Trump will speaking not in an arena but a 3,000-seat north Phoenix church. Donald Trump is coming to town and two things seem likely: 1. Thousands of his supporters will flock to his side in Phoenix and Yuma County – one of the state’s hotspots – to show this president some love. And 2. Our leaders won’t do a thing to stop it. If it’s vital that the president address the nation’s youth, well, there is always Facebook Live. Or Fox News. Or a host of other digital options. Or there is always next month or the month after that, once we've gotten this virus back under control. Instead, Trump prefers to endanger the state in order to come to town and talk about "fake news" and the "Kung Flu" and hey, maybe he'll even show us once again how he walked down that now-infamous ramp at West Point.
