If this were to happen it would overshadow all other events in 2020 thus far. The global implications of this event are mind blowing.

Also, I heard that the dam pylons aren't even connected to the bedrock? Apparently the chinese company hired to do the job cut massive cormers in the concrete pouring, the welding and they didn't connect the pylons to the bedrock in order to save cost.

I guess they were just hoping the weight of the pylons would keep them in place... lol obviously the pylons have water seeping underneath them and causing these massive structures to move and warp.

People, don't cut corners when building a damn dam!

if the CCP doesn't evacuate the flood zone, we could be looking at 10-100 million deaths

China lied and THEIR OWN PEOPLE died :(

Knowing Chinese corruption and taking short cuts in quality control, it will be a miracle if there isn't dam failure and a deadly flood.

If the damn fails, the Chinese will cover up the true extent of destruction and death. Just like they did with Covid. They would rather suppress everything then the truth get out and show any weakness.

My only hope is if it goes, the people in its path... which I've read might be close to 200 million have enough advanced warning to get to higher ground.

I think if the dam fails, the Chinese Communist Party is done. You can hide a pandemic, but you can't hide the world's largest dam failing.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 79059316

Correction, just translate this to mandarin.
"The planned demolition of the Three Gorges Dam went off successfully today. It was planned to be removed in anticipation of a BRAND NEW GEE WHIZ dam that will be better built by superior chinese engineers. The old one was subverted but counter revolutionary thoughts. Any loss of life reported is false, unpatriotic peoples are supposed to hold their breath long enough for the bath that they are given by the courageous government of china. You're welcome."

Latest in China is 11.2 million homeless due to flooding. This is from Chinese TV. More rain on the way. Every upstream dam now has all the drainage gates opened. Also, the government is threatening people not to send any information outside of China on the dam and the flooding or you will be arrested.

Xi and the seven top ccp leaders have left Beijing and no one knows where they are.

Here is the Chinese morning news

This one is probably the best one for the flood if you do not understand Chinese. Something is going on with the 301 hospital. Rumored top officials are being 'treated' something, but the government is looking for the people who started this rumor. There is an inactive volcano in northern China which just became active in Heilongjiang. Last active 500,000 years ago

In answer to your question, the dam has effectively failed. According to the Chinese, the warped appearance of the dam is due to lens distortion on the satellite which took the pictures. We have had 'experts' which have chimed in on this subject and confirmed that the skewed appearance of the dam is indeed due to lens distortion.

On pictures of the dam taken prior to the 2018 flooding there was no distortion due to the lenses in the satellites. The last morning news video I posted around the 6:00, there are pictures of the dam showing the same distortion. These pictures were not taken from space but from a helicopter. Obviously, the cameraman must be getting his or her lenses from the same place the satellite lenses came from.

According to the Chinese, they had a release of water yesterday which displaced 5.1 million people. I do not believe the BBC where they are saying that 20,000 people are being affected. The Chinese morning news is saying 11.2m.

They have opened up all the flood gates upstream to in an attempt to reduce the head pressure on the dam. The dam cannot be repaired. The only thing which can be done is to start over. They will have to open the original water diversion channels back up and build a new dam. This time, properly. First tenant of engineering is form is a function of stress. Even if the original dam was designed properly and constructed properly, it might have failed anyway. I do not believe that the original design of the existing dam was expected to be subjected to this kind of rain event.

If they can reduce the reservoirs down to the bare minimum where they can open up the diversion channels, they may have a chance to avert a major catastrophe. They will have to have effective water management with respect to the upstream dams and will have to implement relief sluices in the event that this happens again so that they are not just dumping millions of gallons of water to go wherever.

I will say that C4 can effectively build a new dam. C4 is the largest construction company in the world, Chinese, by the way. The previous parties who build the dam will be blamed and a new heavily over engineered dam will take its place.

A lot of people in this thread are laughing at the Chinese, but many of them are highly educated. What China used to be no longer exists. They are gong through their own struggles, just like we are. If this dam manages to not crumble, they will demand that it be rebuilt. 600,000,000 people downstream of the dam do not need to be told that the dam is crooked because of lens distortion.

It is now turning to Armageddon weather in China. Here is a few for those who do not understand Chinese, just kind of scroll through the videos. Funny, how the lava chamber of a volcano which last blew 500,000 years ago fills up. Superstitious or not, they believe that, at least some of them do, that the current events are related to this comet which just passed. Flooding is getting worse and worse. And throw in an earthquake.

Concerns Over the Three Gorges Dam Grow, as China Begins Censoring News of the Floods | Crossroads |

The Three Gorges Dam in China has become a center of attention, as waters rise and local authorities issue flood warnings nearby. Taiwan News reports that a prominent Chinese hydrologist, Wang Weiluo, is claiming the dam "could collapse at any moment." He pointed to existing concerns over the dam's design, construction, and process for inspections.

Chinese authorities, meanwhile, are declaring that information on the flood in Chongqing is "sensitive information," which subjects it to censorship. The floods have already hit 26 provinces, required emergency rescue of over 213,000 people, and damaged over 171,000 homes. The situation may grow worse as the 980 reservoirs are impacted.

I was hit by a hailstone once the size of a golfball when we all went on to the covered porch to watch.

A stray hailstone came down sideways landing directly on the top of my foot where all the tendons are. It hurt. A lot.

My dad's brand new truck was covered in dents.

Making the problem potentially worse, there are several dams on the Yangtze, which also seem to be at capacity at the moment with the rain. Any failure higher up will cascade down the system.
