Such a big name for such a small state lol. |

Ordovician User ID: 78888548 ![]() 06/23/2020 09:28 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I would be curious as to how much slave labor was used in “providence plantations” anyway. The word “plantation” does not go automatically with slavery. There were plenty of places known as plantations with no slave labor that were just glorified big farms. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 79054401 ![]() 06/23/2020 09:31 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Rhode Island may change its official state name over slavery connotations Quoting: CrsCrpr Rhode Island Governor Gina Raimondo signed an executive order on Monday taking the ‘first steps’ to change the state’s full name: ‘The State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations.’ The ‘plantations’ portion has come under increased scrutiny following widespread protests after the killings of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor. The order, Executive Order 20-48, will change the name to just ‘Rhode Island’ in official communications from the governor’s office – including future executive orders, citations, and stationary letterheads. It also calls on all state executive agencies to remove ‘plantations’ from their websites. [link to nypost.com (secure)] EXECUTIVE ORDER 20-48 June 22, 2020 RISE TOGETHER -FIRST STEPS TO A MORE EOUIT ABLE AND RESILIENT RHODE ISLAND WHEREAS, for many years, there has been a public discussion about removing the word "plantations" from Rhode Island's official name; WHEREAS, many of the State's residents find it painful that a word so closely associated with slavery should appear in the official name of the State; WHEREAS, the pain that this association causes to some of our residents should be of concern to all Rhode Islanders and we should do everything in our power to ensure that all communities can take pride in our State; WHEREAS, changing the State's official name would require the voters to amend the Rhode Island Constitution; and WHEREAS, I urge the voters to approve the name change in November but will take all measures now that are within my control to eliminate the name from my official communications and those of my executive agencies. NOW, THEREFORE, I GINA M. RAIMONDO, by virtue of the authority vested in me as Governor of the State of Rhode Island, do hereby order and direct the following: 1. Effective immediately, the Office of the Governor will no longer use the word "Plantations" in executive orders or citations or on its website. As soon as practicable, the Office of the Governor will order and commence using stationery that reads "State of Rhode Island" only. 2. Effective immediately, all executive agencies under the Governor's control will remove the word "Plantations" from their websites. As soon as practicable, all such agencies will eliminate the word from their stationery, electronic letterhead and all other official correspondence, including paystubs. 3. The Governor's Office and the state agencies under the Governor's control shall determine whether there is an available alternative to the use of the state seal in official documents and replace or omit such seal where possible. Ordovician User ID: 78888548 ![]() 06/23/2020 09:42 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Drove through it about 20 years ago...the downtown looked totally empty but not decayed like Detroit. Just kind of eerie and dusty, some nice old architecture. There were a few big skyscrapers and lots of empty-looking midsized buildings. I wondered where all the people were; The guy I was traveling with told me the city population was down 75% from its peak, when it used to be a big textile hub in the 40s and 50s I guess...maybe it’s become more conspicuously ruined since then. |

You people understand how much has to be reprinted and how much web work and everything else is involved in a name change even if it's minor? It's beyond stupid because there's nothing about a plantation that means slavery is involved. |

Quoting: Hadriana That’s probably why they are doing it...gotta keep that budget justified... The state is tiny. How can they justify an entire state bureaucracy AND a providence city bureaucracy AND probably county officials, chamber of commerce, who knows what else kind of bloat for a place smaller than some ranches in Texas. |

[link to governor.ri.gov (secure)] How ridiculous is that? My family moved to Rhode Island when I was six and I didn't leave until I was 27. I graduated college, got married, blah blah and even worked for high class mobster lawyers and I don't think I ever really knew the full name or gave it a second thought. It's likely VERY FEW in that teeny state ever really knew it UNTIL NOW THAT THE GOV HAS DRAWN ATTENTION TO IT. My God. There is so much history in that state, it's a shame to bow down. But that is how that state rolls unfortunately. It's all fun & games until the Dogman stands up Life's journey is not to arrive at the grave safely in a well-preserved body but rather to skid in sideways, totally worn out, shouting "Holy Shit! What a ride!" In times of trouble, I ask myself, "What would Sarah Conner do?" |
