Australia on tsunami alert after NZ quake

Sunday Sep 30

"Parts of southern Australia are on tsunami alert after an undersea earthquake with a magnitude of 7.6 hit south of New Zealand, officials said.

Geoscience Australia said the quake hit near the Auckland Islands at 3:23 pm (0523 GMT) and was centred 350 kilometres (217 miles) southwest of New Zealand and 1,400 kilometres southeast of the southern Australian state of Tasmania.

The Bureau of Meteorology issued a tsunami bulletin warning people in coastal areas in Tasmania and southeastern mainland Australia to listen to news updates.

"The Joint Australian Tsunami Warning Centre has detected a large undersea earthquake south of New Zealand in the Auckland Islands region and is seeking confirmation that tsunami have been generated," it said.

If tsunami have been generated, then they could start affecting southern Australia from 5:45 pm and reach Sydney by 06:15 pm, it added."

Scientists issue warning on Ruapehu

Sat, 29 Sep 2007

"There could be more seismic drama on Mt Ruapehu with scientists saying the mountain could again erupt without warning.

A sudden eruption on Tuesday seriously injured a climber, forced the evacuation of ski lodges and closed road and rail routes around the mountain.

Described as a "Blue Sky" eruption because there is simply no sign it is going to happen, the activity caused two small lahars to pour from the crater lake.

Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences volcanologist Craig Miller is urging caution."

..."Earlier reports from the European Union-based Global disaster Alert and Coordination System reported the quake, at 6.23 pm New Zealand summer time, as 7.6 magnitude on the Richter Scale while the US Geological Survey (USGS) was posting it as 7.3.

The USGS said the quake was a shallow 18.9 kilometres deep and was 475 kilometres south west of Invercargill. It was 205 kilometres from the unpopulated Auckland Islands.

In historic terms the quake appears unusual.

Historic data shows it is much larger than usual in the area, and out of line with a fault line running southwest.

The EU sent a global email and mobile phone text warning about the quake."

The last time we had a major quake in this location
3 days later that historic event in the Indian ocean occured triggering the tsunami that killed thousands of people
I dont like predicting events like this, but keep your attention focused, as i have a feeling we may see more devastation in a couple of days.
the Pacific plate sticks out on this part, it looks like a weak spot, as it thins out to a point,it cups the lower part of the Australasian plate here, the Pacific plate is pushing the Aussie plate up towards India
We could see some violent movement manifest from either here,
or up in the Indian ocean!.
