A gun is an unbiased inanimate object. Violence is not. A violent person without a gun is still a violent person. So by your logic a violent person holding a hammer or sewing needle are somehow exempt from violent behavior simply because they're not holding a gun?!? I'm confused!

If I may say: My niece and SIL were very against guns and having them in the house. They said the same things you did and recently, we helped arm them. We didn't ask any questions and didn't say "I told you so" to them, but it was clear something had changed with them. They reached out because I'm sure they evaluated the current situation and thought better to protect themselves and their families.

It's a pity that discussions of firearms/weapons is taken as glorification of killing instead of taken in the manner it is intended. Most discussions are viewpoints that people have because they feel their weapon(s) fit them or have features they find helpful so they do not kill anyone/anything unintentionally (including themselves). This is viewed as 'love affair' when in fact, it is no different than discussion of automobile features.

By your line of commentary, it seems you feel you have a moral high-ground of some kind. I can appreciate you feeling that way, but many of us have had to put away idealistic thoughts like this to entertain realistic real-world issues. I wish very much we could live in a world where this is not the case, but we do not.

My advice to you would be for you to not wait too late to truly entertain whether you feel being a martyr is necessary or whether you can be more effective in changing the world by being able to live. All it takes is one wacko with a perceived mission to wipe you out, your family and all you love.
