When I saw them, I thought the same thing. At same time hoping it's just us getting backups ordered and in place. I'm sure the USG is tossing $$ at the utilities to "prepare"...but it isn't going to be a function of putting new tranformers up on poles. The WH has had a blue ribbon commissioned for two decades to study the problem and they came up with nothing. The fact that this is all now in play may be nothing or may a result of credible intel. No way to know. Bottom line, if it is in response to a credible threat, the utilities can do nothing..but you, individually, can make final preps for life off the grid |

Probably won't surprise the GLP crowd, but almost ALL of the transformers and gear used in the utilities come from...wait for it...China. Could be that the utilities are stashing extras in place due to an upcoming war. It could also be the strategic plan of the chinese to pop an emp knowing the us has no domestic mfg capability in this area. I know this first hand. I was in a related industry for awhile |

I met one of the key members of the WH council on emp...was a retired general who said it was the one thing that kept him up at night. I did learn a lot and pitched some ideas, but they went nowhere. To those who understand the grid, it is a 100 year old patchwork that was built to run motors and incadescent lights...not a it backbone. Its a mess. You're welcome...although I will feel better if no one else is seeing this lol. I spent several years working on transmission systems relating to solar power generation and had some interface with a regional utility. Got the opportunity to see the entire grid operation of a small town and ended up on a local commission evaluating the possibility of canceling the utility franchise and setting up a municipal grid using wind and solar as the base load. |

We very rarely lose power. When it does happen it can be attributed to grid overload during a heatwave or extreme thunderstorms. When it does happen it is out for maybe a half-hour at most. I might be able to chock one up to the grid being taxed during the recent heat wave. That one lasted over an hour. Just had another one today and the weather is only mid-eighties and that is a few degrees less than normal for this time of year. I'm close to a com-ed base on the terminus of the river. |
