Has Open Source lost the battle against proprietary OS PCs like Microsoft and Apple? I have no idea. I've been a Debian desktop user since 2006 and that's fine. One day after my graduate term paper was eaten by a virus on a Windows server, I decided I had had enough of Microsoft forever. I had to spend 30 hours straight retyping it. Never again. |

The Linux community / programmers must not be trying hard enough to make a version that a Windows user can take and easily use. Or not enough marketing being done for it, even though it is open source free software. It's clearly superior to Windows. Quoting: Butch DeFeo Honestly, I just don't see how linux could be any simpler or more stable than Linux Mint! Yes, it requires a little bit of relearning, but compared to the madness of MS, I can't see why everyone is not willing to at least consider it. But, I have lost hope that people can handle even small changes in their lives today. They have honestly become close to walking zombies. |

If you are still on a big proprietary, privacy-stealing OS like Micro$haft or Mac, you are a small cog in the Borg Collective. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 78584220 You have been assimilated. The problem is that it makes those people feel safe! And the will even defend their assimilation. People today really mentally damaged. No joke. |

Have to keep using Windows because not all my games on Steam will work under Linux. Games have been the clincher for a long time and no efforts are really made on Linux. |

Except that most new games by developers that only use Steam for distribution won't play on SteamOS. Any game that was only developed in directX won't play either. |

Has Open Source lost the battle against proprietary OS PCs like Microsoft and Apple? The biggest problem with Linux, is that a Linux installation is a random collection of parts pulled from all over the place. You never know which parts a user has installed, or which version. And this makes software development and distribution a NIGHTMARE. Want to support Windows? Test one build. Congrats, now you reach the vast majority of the desktop market! Want to support Mac OS too, for some extra easy profit? Test one build. Congrats, now you reach almost the entire desktop market! Want to support Linux? Test 100 builds on 100 different Linux versions. And you still didn't get them all. What do you get for all the trouble? Congrats, now you reach the last tiny percentage of the desktop market, that also happens to be people who are religiously opposed to paying for software. You won't make much money from this crowd, that's for sure. There is very little commercial third-party software for Linux, and this is the reason: It's just not worth the effort supporting Linux for a software business! And that's the primary reason Linux still isn't making any serious inroads as a desktop OS. |

My only bugbear is, I am a techy musician/photographer/video editor, so I cannot do any of my work on Linux. I sure wish I could then I would not have to dual boot my computer. |

Has Open Source lost the battle against proprietary OS PCs like Microsoft and Apple? I'm building a Linux OS that's forked from Xubuntu and uses Chromium as the internet browser. Quoting: blu 73851818 Why bother? The only thing that will make a linux distro popular is massive triple A game support. That is why its not replacing windows any time soon and people need a easy way to install software on it. Companies can port to open GL without issue. I heard a game dev mention in an interview that the sound drivers for linux are a mess. Or they were some years back around 2009 ish.. Maybe that has been fixed.. People would flock to a free os like the linux distros. I think the main problem is there is too many of them and the game devs need to pick one and use it. Steam os was a step in the right direction but they should have made it so only people using the steam os can link up on multiplayer. Then create white and black lists for what can be installed so no aimbots could be abused or other hack programs. I don't even play shooters online anymore because they are ripe with hacks. |

Has Open Source lost the battle against proprietary OS PCs like Microsoft and Apple? Each time, things get incrementally better. But each time, things get incrementally worse too. My main driver is the desktop environment. Yes, yes, I know you can customize your desktop environment til the cows come home. But I don't want to. I want a well-designed, functional, and easy to use and navigate desktop environment right out of the box. So far, there is no such distro that has that. Deepin does, but that distro is made by the Chinese. FerenOS was already there with a peppermint based desktop theme, but changed it and now it sucks. I almost started building my own distro because of this reason alone. ```````````````` ````__/\__`````` ~~~\____/~~~~ .~~..~~~....~~~ ~..~~~....~~~~ Thoughts do not come from you nor God; you do not create thoughts; you are not your thoughts; every thought is a lie. - 2 Corinthians 10:5 - [link to www.biblegateway.com (secure)] |

As with all other longstanding issues with Linux, audio hasn't been fixed, and probably never will be. This is especially bad for developers of audio workstations and audio plugins of course. In reality, people make music on Mac or Windows, because very little audio software exists for Linux and what little exists is poor quality, and because support for pro audio interfaces on Linux is piss poor to non-existent. |
