Since Oregon allows citizens to own machine guns and switchblade knives, it would be logical that body armor is allowed. You can purchase it from all the usual suspects e.g. online. . |

Heck I ordered my wife one and I ordered hard body armor myself. You can buy soft Kevlar vests for about$500 or so. Plates are going to be more expensive. Mine were around $650, and that doesn't include the plate carrier. The main difference between soft body armor and hard body armor is that if you get shot with soft armor it's going to hurt like A MF, and depending on the round you may still die of traumatic injuries. All it does is stop the bullet from penetrating you, but the force has to go somewhere. Opto_isolator |

Thank you again just like buying a gun, you should define the mission first. there's a reason that most cops wear III+ armor instead of hard. it addresses 90% of possible threats, i.e. handguns and knives. if you think you'll be in a long range shootout against 308 rifles, then hard armor is the right choice. . |
Optoisolator User ID: 78381653 United States 07/27/2020 03:17 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | OK - here's what I've learned in the past month researching myself. Hard body armor. Get the lightest you can afford. As one of the other posters commented, it can get heavy. You will need 2 plates minimum - one front and one back. If you want to add protection you can get side plates as well. For hard plates - GET US MADE plates. That is my recommendation based on what I read. You will pay more, but if you are investing into armor THIS IS YOUR LIFE you are talking about. Most US manufacturers certify their plates to NIJ standards - this means lots of money to certify this. They test batches to ensure that these pass testing to protect you. There have been a few big manufacturers in the US that have recalled plates or have not released batches due to not passing tests. Do the chineese plate manufacturers do this? I doubt it. Do you trust your life on this? I don't. There are a few good US manufacturers that I recommend based on my reading - Hesco, RMA Defense, Spartan Armor Systems, Velocity Systems. Some of these can only be purchased through various dealers since they won't sell to the general public (Velocity Systems). The others have dealers you can buy from. I bought from RMA Defense. As stated earlier - plates are heavy. I bought 2 1093 plates (III+), meaning they will stop almost all caliber pistol rounds, and M193 and M855 ammo, which is good enough (in my opinion). MOST folks won't be using larger rounds so that is just hedging my best due to cost. If you want to stop everything get level IV, but they cost more and weigh more. The plates I bought are about 5 lbs each, meaning I will be adding about 10+ lbs of weight to my body, on top of a ballistic helmet (and any other things in the load-out such as mags, and gear). I originally was looking at Hesco 4 series plates, but they were close to 10 lbs EACH, meaning that would add an additional 10 lbs. So I paid more and reduced the weight. One BIG thing to keep in mind - check backface deformation specs. Good armor that is tested will provide these results. Anything that has excessive backface deformation will cause severe body damage under the plate (think organ damage, cracked bones, etc). The force of the bullet goes into the plate, which stops it, but good plates will not need anything behind them to prevent this. Cheap plates will require a trauma pad to displace the impact to prevent your death by the blunt force trauma. Soft armor can also stop rounds, but will have a greater chance of blunt force trauma since there is no hard plate to stop the round - meaning you will be hurting like hell after getting hit, but you may survive depending on the situation. I would ONLY buy US made soft armor here as well - who the hell knows what the Chinese are doing to shit they make and send here. Opto_isolator |
