COUNT Down to MARS:
[link to mars.nasa.gov (secure)]

The mission – designed to better understand the geology and climate of Mars and seek signs of ancient life on the Red Planet – will use the robotic scientist, which weighs just under 2,300 pounds (1,043 kilograms) and is the size of a small car, to collect and store a set of rock and soil samples that could be returned to Earth by future Mars sample return missions. It also will test new technologies to benefit future robotic and human exploration of Mars.

Launch is s scheduled to 7:50 AM eastern July 30th.

Prelaunch Activities 7AM July 30th

[link to www.nasa.gov (secure)]

Mars 2020 Perseverance is part of America’s larger Moon to Mars exploration approach that includes missions to the Moon as a way to prepare for human exploration of the Red Planet. Charged with sending the first woman and next man to the Moon by 2024, NASA will establish a sustained human presence on and around the Moon by 2028 through NASA's Artemis program.

Due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, media participation in news conferences will be remote. Only a limited number of media, who already have been accredited, will be accommodated at Kennedy. For the protection of media and Kennedy employees, the Kennedy Press Site News Center facilities will remain closed to all media throughout these events.

Yeah... it’s not like we have anything better to spend our money on right now. Economy is humming. Zero unemployment. Zero debt. And we are running a huge surplus. Besides, no one wants to go to Vegas these days.

Obviously: Any government program has been a decade in the making.
2010 we had what national crisis oh ya 2 yrs into a presidency.

Probably 2yrs concept and development of a plan. A year to acquire funding and then maybe 5yrs of development of the project. Launch schedules are probably planned a year in advance.
So Obviously that money has already been allocated, spent and the mission will go on.
Obviously this all makes complete sense.
As for new programs, I doubt we are developing much in the planning aspect with these shutdowns.

However, Your observations may differ, Obviously.

There's a roughly month-long window every two years or so when it's possible to launch a Mars mission, so they all tend to go at the same time.

Not a nuclear reactor, but it does have plutonium. The plutonium decays and generates heat that's turned into the electricity that powers the spacecraft. The previous Mars rover, Curiosity, is powered the same way.

You don't understand orbital dynamics. Or that this project has been going since BEFORE the virus hit. So it was all paid for DURING the boom in America's economy.

You're just a NASA hater right? Trolling here with that lame comment.
