I think that some people have the idea that anything poisonous works the same as any other poison, that if you drink something labeled "poisonous," you will simply drop dead within a minute or two (if not within seconds or moments) and all your troubles will be over.

There was a guy in a news story a few years back who tried to commit suicide by drinking something like Drano or Liquid Plumber. What happened next was that he destroyed his esophagus and now has to rely on inconvenient methods of getting food and water into his system. Instead of ending his problems, he compounded them greatly.

Jack London's first published story was an SF/fantasy story about a man hired by a mad scientist who had him killed repeatedly so that they could try out various methods of death and resuscitation. The character in the story found that some forms of death, such as induced lockjaw, were too awful to put up with, while death by certain methods was not hard at all. Clearly, Jack London had been researching methods of committing suicide when he wrote that story. Seventeen years later London committed suicide with one of those very substances he had concluded would produce an easy death.

I would have confronted him, and the moment he came towards me with his baseball bat, I would have put him down. I carry concealed, and most times around my ranch, I wear a cartridge belt with a revolver. It is news like this that really pisses me off that so many people are unarmed and can't/don't protect their family. People, you need to learn to shoot, and then continue practicing until you are familiar with your firearms. You cannot count on being protected by the police or anyone else.

The idea was to put himself in medical detention so he didn't go to lock up. In there he'll get a psych evaluation, play it up with sad sack routine and before you know it he'll get a slap on the wrist, end up in a mental hospital for a year or two and be back out on the streets.
