Quoting: Anonymous Coward 75823884 you sound very handy! that's awesome. my Dad and brother are like that, too. although i never saw them melt down aluminum and cast a part. interesting, didn't even think about that ... guess you need a welding tool for that? something similar? making something tangible with one's own hands is a good feeling, imho. don't have skills like yours, but can make other things. might be a good time for me to buy a new sewing machine... Aluminum isn't hard too melt, melting temp just over 1200*F. I use a 55 gallon steel drum converted to a furnace with a blower attached to it. Just using hardwood to fuel it, if I don't keep an eye on it, the steel begins to soften. Don't need a welder for that. Also, if done correctly, welding can be done with iron oxide (rust) and aluminum powder in the correct quantities and some clay to make a shallow "trough" were the weld is to be made. Aluminum power can be made in a tumbler with steel bearings over many days. Just have to drop back to the "old" technology if necessary. it is good there are people like you who have skills like this! Here is a source for old time technology. Want to cast Iron? Aluminum? Better hurry, they are thinking about closing. [link to www.youroldtimebookstore.com (secure)] Wow, I remember Lindsay Publications from decades ago. Used to read various publications from them way back then. A lot of that type of knowledge has been committed to memory and used often through out the year. Nevertheless, will have to take another look and see what gaps I need to fill. Thanks for the link! DOOM is what you make of it. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 77773715 United States 08/02/2020 09:08 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | We're in this predicament because demonrats insisted we suck the China tit for everything we needed. Quoting: ~Jazz~ Exactly. Covid brought the global supply chain to a screeching halt. It shouldn't be shocking that we're now dealing a lack of goods that were largely supplied by China. Many didn't realize just how much of what we depend on for food, entertainment, technology, industry and medicine is supplied by China. This is what happens when you base nearly your entire supply chain in another country and then have a worldwide disaster. As bad as it's been, we're honestly lucky that the crisis we have to deal with is a pandemic and not an all-out war. Most of this problem is not because of the Chinese. All the Chinese do and did is supplying you with cheap products you need every day. MUCH cheaper than anything made in the USA. The problem is Trump. He started a tradewar with China. And the rest of the world more or less. Again, this is only the beginning. Once China and other countries start their payback on the USA is when the pain will really begin. You didnt really believe that all this anti China bullshit was without consequences ? Because there will be consequences. The Chinese outnumber you by 4:1 and have 10 IQ point advantage. Ask Elon Musk about China. Trump is picking an enemy he cannot defeat and whom, when provoked, will crush the USA. Dont forget Korea, Vietnam. You lost to china there too. Chinese have 3 pt IQ advantage, but most Americans have experiential knowledge they don't. remove the 15% of the population with 85 IQ average and the Whites have an average of 102 IQ. chinese have 105. They stole everything they have. It was all someone else’s intellectual property. |

Quoting: ~Jazz~ YUP! Are you so sure? I think the demand for cheap shit came from the citizens of this country. Has nothing to do with political party It’s the leadership of the big companies who chose profits via cheaper overseas labor over maintaining in-house production. And both political parties are guilty of that because they give-in to those who lobby to keep labor cheap. They all sell out. Any pol who gets in office to change it doesn’t get very far. It’s rigged. But the citizens of this country definitely didn’t ask for it. |

Quoting: BBQ BOY™ Personally I think our Government is hoarding this stuff for the Military. We have a Beef/Pork processing plant not to far from here. They are running 3 shifts 7 days a week but none of their Products are available here? So where's it going? Same thing with Kellogg's plant here, upped production ( per my nephew that works there) but limited supplies here on the shelf. That's exactly what they are doing. They are preparing for fucking WAR.... So are the Chinese. My thoughts also. I mean come on.. Coin shortage? Really? Chemical shortage? You don't say? It should be obvious what's going on. Secret war time production.... Remember a few months ago when oil futures went negative? Media claimed the reason was a lack of storage capacity. How did THAT get fixed in less than one month? The military can certainly find the room and possibly bought at a massive discount. |
