Mitch McConnell just opened the door for an extension of the $600 unemployment boost — if Trump supports it
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said on Tuesday that he could support an extension of the $600 federal unemployment insurance boost — if President Donald Trump ends up backing it.

At his weekly Senate Republican leadership press conference, McConnell was asked about Speaker Nancy Pelosi appearing to draw a red line on the $600 federal supplement and whether he could support a negotiated spending package containing it.

"Wherever this thing settles between the president of the United States and his team, who has to sign it into law, and the Democrat, not insignificant minority in the Senate and majority in the House, is something I'm prepared to support," McConnell told reporters. "Even if I have some problems with certain parts of it."

The Kentucky senator added many Republicans would likely not vote for the final stimulus legislation if it extended the measure, which has drawn fierce GOP criticism for months.

"We know this is going to be a negotiated settlement," McConnell said. "It's not going to produce a kumbaya moment like we had back in March in April where everybody voted aye. But the American people in the end need help."

The comments mark a shift in McConnell's position towards the enhanced unemployment benefit as he's expressed opposition in the past. Federal unemployment insurance forms one of the biggest rifts in ongoing stimulus negotiations between top congressional Democrats and the White House.

Trump, though, does not support extending the initiative and it's unclear if his position will change as talks stretch into their second week with few signs of progress.

Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer are spearheading the discussions on the Democratic side while Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and White House chief of staff Mark Meadows are taking the lead for the Trump administration.

Republicans have long criticized the program, saying it allows many workers to earn more from the government than they would on the job. Last week, the GOP rolled out a plan cutting the benefit to $200 for two months and transitioning it onto a 70% wage replacement scheme starting in October.

The $600 federal supplement onto state unemployment checks was enacted in March under the Cares Act. But it expired on July 31 and Congress has intensely debated the amount it should be replaced with. Senate Republicans are still deeply divided on their proposal, which they unveiled four days before the enhanced payments ended.

Democrats are pushing to extend the $600 payouts through January, arguing the economy remains weak with scarce jobs available for unemployed people. Over 30 million people are drawing unemployment benefits.

I think they negotiated a lot of that stuff out. The main sticking point though seems to be the 600. Pelosi drew a line in the sand and said 600 or nothing and if GOP says no they need to own not giving the people help. Believe it or not. People like being helped so.. Could be an election loser if GOP doesn't cave on that point.

Even if jobs remain scarce, you don't pay people more than they were making. Let the state pay their portion of UI and let the Feds make up the difference. Let the UI offices bill the Feds for the difference. It's not hard to bring your last few checks to the UI office or download them and they can figure it out. End it in Nov.

Why go work if you make more sitting home? This is exactly what the Republicans are complaining about. No one drawing extra bucks wants to go work at those jobs.

Idk about other states but what I learned about unemployment here was if you couldn't find a job that paid what you were previously making, you could still take the lesser paying job and Unemployment insurance would still pay you up to your entitlement amount to make up the difference.

It's not all about "being helped". The government was responsible for deciding what businesses could remain open and what couldn't which was LUDICROUS. We were all okay, just going about our business and they fucked it up for so many...over something that is clearly a fraud yet guaranteed to make some people millionaires by the time it is done (Gates, Fauci, Innovio etc.). Everybody at the top will get a piece of the pie. So, the least they could do is dish it out in cash to the people.

BTW, people can still go back to work and get the $600.00 as long as they make at least $1.00 UNDER the regular benefit amount. This is very possible to do and businesses will still get their workers.

Re: Mitch McConnell just opened the door for an extension of the $600 unemployment boost — if Trump supports it
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said on Tuesday that he could support an extension of the $600 federal unemployment insurance boost — if President Donald Trump ends up backing it.

This was the government's fault!! They need to pay up for disrupting people's lives if only through January. It's the LEAST they could do, those motherfuckers. I can't believe how utterly complacent people are. Just bend over why don't ya.

If the company need their employee, it shall pay more, than they their employee make by staying home.

No, the employee shall work for their money like most of us do.

They don't get to stay home because they only got paid $20 per hour to work and now get paid $30 to stay home.

End this bullshit, now, otherwise you'll have retards like Capt. Tripps who's begging for taxpayers to pay for his GLP membership.

It's amazing that he has money for things like weed and GLP memberships but cries about needing assistance.

Work or starve.
