Hundreds of parents and children gathered in Massachusetts on Sunday to protest the state’s new flu shot requirement for all students.

The demonstration was held in front of the Massachusetts State House in Boston with protesters holding signs that read “My child, my choice” and “Bodily autonomy is a human right.”

“No forced shots” was also written in chalk outside the building.

The protesters called on Republican Gov. Charlie Baker to rescind a state mandate from Aug. 19 requiring students 6 months and older to get the flu vaccine by Dec. 31 for this school year, unless a medical or religious exemption is given.

The mandate, believed to be the first in the country, includes students in child care, pre-school, kindergarten and K-12, as well as full-time undergraduate and graduate students under 30, and all full- and part-time health science students.

Officials fear the flu season and coronavirus pandemic will overwhelm the health care system, according to the Boston Globe.

“I would hope people would understand this is an important part of how we continue to fight the [corona]virus here in Massachusetts,” Baker said on Aug. 20. “The more people who get the flu shot don’t get the flu and don’t wind up in the ER.”

Some of the parents at the protest said they didn’t want to be labeled anti-vaccine but didn’t agree with the new rule.

“The flu vaccine should not be a mandate,” Jessica Marchant told WCVB 5. “It should be a choice.”

Section 15: Vaccination and immunization

Section 15. No child shall, except as hereinafter provided, be admitted to school except upon presentation of a physician's certificate that the child has been successfully immunized against diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus, measles and poliomyelitis and such other communicable diseases as may be specified from time to time by the department of public health.

A child shall be admitted to school upon certification by a physician that he has personally examined such child and that in his opinion the physical condition of the child is such that his health would be endangered by such vaccination or by any of such immunizations. Such certification shall be submitted at the beginning of each school year to the physician in charge of the school health program. If the physician in charge of the school health program does not agree with the opinion of the child's physician, the matter shall be referred to the department of public health, whose decision will be final.

In the absence of an emergency or epidemic of disease declared by the department of public health, no child whose parent or guardian states in writing that vaccination or immunization conflicts with his sincere religious beliefs shall be required to present said physician's certificate in order to be admitted to school.

This week, without media buzz, the CDC updated Covid-19 death numbers and reported that only 9200 Americans have died from Covid-19 alone. This report should, in a sane world, lead to ultimate narrative collapse. And if not this, look at what happened in Wuhan China just a couple of weeks ago. In fact, if you show this information to the average person, they will attempt to spin it into an argument on how the CDC is just a propaganda arm of Trump’s fascist regime and that without masks and social distancing the numbers would be higher by orders of magnitude. Brings to mind that old quote You can't reason people out of a position they didn't reason themselves into. There is no reason here. There is only emotional screeching against cognitive dissonance, people so deep into the rabbit holes of their own ideologies, there is no light to be found.

What is also becoming alarming is the extent to which the propaganda machine has been merrily humming along in support of masks by appealing to virtually every insecurity and virtue possible- from patriotism, to nostalgia, to racial justice, to vanity and sex appeal, and some even appealing to theology, going so far as to suggest that Jesus, self-limiting for the sake of others as he was, would have “masked up” himself. One article even states outright that quote when your mask limits your ability to communicate clearly, perhaps you could let that moment remind you of the countless souls whose voices are never heard.
