Now that I think about it, I have NEVER seen a buck with antlers. Do they really exist?

Kind of what I figured, that they prefer to hide out in the deep woods. But those antlers are likely to catch on brush and branches.

I wonder if human hunting has caused the deer with antlers to be shy.

There are eight deer here now, some of them large, but not an antler in sight. Suburban area close to a forest.

Predators don't care about the antlers, they just want easy meat. It's human hunting that has altered their behavior, without a doubt.

Nice 4 point buck hanging out on my block most of last week eating fallen apples and ash berries. They know about the apples they come into downtown for them.

If you see fawns there are obviously bucks in the area.

Often you can hear them and not see them. Ever here knocking in the woods? Like someone hitting a tree with a 2x4? That's a buck hitting his antlers against a tree letting you know he doesn't like you in the area. He doesn't give up exactly where he is but he's letting you know he's there.

Ignorant people attribute this to bigfoots hitting trees with rocks or something but it's just a freaking buck. I live in Texas now and most hunters don't even know this because they sit on their ass in a heated blind, wait for the feeder to go off and blast whatever deer walk up to get corn. Ask a real hunter who actually stalks deer and elk and they will tell you about the antlers.

Some hunters carry an antler to knock against a tree. During hunting season this is telling other deer, yeah, I'm on you turf, let's fight. You'll get bigger bucks that way.
