Good boots (if you really are in a survival situation, there is no more important clothing item than a good, supportive pair of sport/trail boots).
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 72963006

Which are better? "Tactical" boots or "Hiking" boots?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 78691834

Well, I always would search for "trail boot", but... check this pair out:

[link to www.amazon.com (secure)]

You can live in these... they are so great, so comfortable, and the foot / ankle support is superb.

About gloves:

I like the Mechanix brand. They are extremely wearable, reasonable durable, and completely sufficient for almost all situations.

If you see yourself building your own log cabin in Alaska from lumber you fell with an axe, you might need something more.

I like those boots. I wish they came up a bit higher. That’s a reasonable price also.

Re: Underrated Survival Items For a Bugout Bag?
On a slight but related tangent, one great tip I got from Selco Begovic’s book is don’t use a military looking backpack. It draws attention and people think “What’s in that bad ass backpack? Let’s ambush that cat and take it.”

May be obvious to some of y’all but it made me switch from my ALICE pack to a simple backpack that a college kid would carry.
 Quoting: Tennessee Patriot

That encompasses everything. Be the grey man no one notices. Blend in. Nothing military looking, no sports insignia, flashy anything or noticeable.

Survival is avoiding conflict

Lose weight now. Nothing stands out like fat people. Start walking each day building up to a few miles. Get rid of every med you can. Fat and sick won’t make it very far.

I started running 5 years ago in preparation, I currently run 6-10 miles everyday, and a lot of other things lol

They are great. Note that those are vented. They also make a waterproof version that are warmer in winter. Also a shoe version. Make sure to get them directly from Amazon and not a third party seller....otherwise you may get fakes. :)

Not for a bugout bag but I was recently in a state forest by myself and the entire place was pitch black. It was a weekday and no one else was there. If something goes bump in the night you need to light it up.

so I went over to Harbor Freight purchased a Quantum flashlight, 534 lumens for $16 after the coupon. checked Amazon, $29.49 for the same flashlight.

get one and light em up....

They are not boots, they are tennis hiking trail shoes. Imagine running or hiking through thick woods with over grown brush and downed trees with broken branches and thorns everywhere jabbing and snagging at your feet, clothes and body as you cut, pull, slip, tip and slide up and down cliffs and over trees.

Re: Underrated Survival Items For a Bugout Bag?
1. A nice hand held water filter device, even if it's those filter straws.

2. If you insist on clinging to your precious technology, you might want to look into RFID shielding cloth/sheets/bags otherwise your gadgets will be sending out a homing signal. Some little feller bored along with the other 300 cubical farmers in that room in India will be subcontracted out to push the button that sends a small $3.99 drone out with a tiny but effective C-4 charge that will be sufficient to pretty much eliminate everything within a 20 foot radius of where you are standing, using your own obliterated body parts as shrapnel to do most of the work for them. Maybe you'll get a really cool but unknown ring tone right before blammo.

3. One of those kits of stamped out flat metal sheets that fit together turning into a camp stove. Very handy, it forms a small chimney stove thing that shelters the burning wood under/inside it, while directing heat straight up for cooking. The titanium ones are lighter than the stainless steel ones. Pans, water boilers or whatever sit right on top, even a small grill could be used but wasn't included with mine. They come right apart, go into a small thick soot blocking bag that fits in a backpack about 1/2 inch thick or so.

If a genuine bug-out is called for, take everything you can because you might not be back for a while (or it may be burned to the ground when you return) stash heavier less immediately needed supplies as you retreat, you can always come back for them as long as you have good close by spots (have you even looked for places like that good for stashing bulkier items/bags, have an actual plan of retreat, have you actually practiced it?). It's easier to sneak back to the remote edge of your neighborhood to retrieve the heavier but just as needed items, rather than chance really going back into an unknown situation that used to be your property. The last time you were home you were running for your life, they could still be around somewhere in the dark.

4. For most of ya'll I'd say just remain on the couch, stay tuned in here at GLP until even this place goes dark, then crank the old Thorazine drip up a few notches...your doomsday has arrived, finally.

Look at that shoe, it would snag on everything with every step and has so many places for stuff to poke through, it is not solid, it would rip, puncture, tear and fall apart in many places. It is not stitched, it would separate from the sole, it would not protect your foot from being crushed by a rock or log, it no where near weather proof. I would never purchase that shoe.

fire.....I own Bics but know that in really cold weather they might not work. so I also carry storm proof matches, windproof and waterproof. I carry UCO and NATO matches.

UCO are better so why carry NATO matches? I noticed that 9 of them fit perfectly in a Oral-B dental pic case, with a small piece of cotton. And that jeans change pocket no one uses, I keep it in there and never notice it. Its always on my person. And recently in that state forest with no recent fire experience I got a fire going with one match.

Watch utube videos like Corporals Corner. to be continued...

I watch a lot of utube videos and boots?

there are people out there who actually go backpacking in sandals and their feet/ankles take a beating.

so the trend for thru hikers is trail runners. flimsy compared to that Merrel boot and don't even cover the ankle bone. but to each his own.

I wish I had the money for a pair of Lowa's made in Europe.

When you do get a good pair of boots, you break them in slowly an hour at a time with two pairs of wet socks as they conform to your foot without blistering your foot. You have to break in new shoes and boots you plan to wear for vigorous activity.

I love finding a good pair of leather boots at the thrift store already broke in. I do not look for pretty, I look for practical.

Gold Bond medicated powder.

I'm already live where people would like to bug out to, but this is in my bomb shelter. If you are living on the road or stuck in one room with a bunch of other people for two weeks you are going to start to stink. It makes good pit powder, and you can use it on burns, abrasions, cures diaper rash and jock itch. And it can kill bed bugs.

And when your neighbor starts pimping out his daughter for firewood and beef jerky you can use it for pubic lice.

Never get a shoe when the top edge rubes on the ankle bone, it will always irritate no matter how well it is broke in. At least an inch above the ankle bone for comfort and help prevent injury and ankle sprains.

Re: waterproof matches

They work great, but the striker (the little sandpaper strip) is not waterproof, so make sure to keep that dry.

In case it hasn't been said before, you need a SPARE can opener. A can opener is one of the most important things to have, and you might break or lose the first one. Should be great for barter too.

It is easy to open a can with a knife. Just use the tip on the edge of the can, keeping it slightly angled to the outside edge go along and keep lifting up.

I'm a fan of guitar strings.
I mean, if you have a guitar that's awesome too, but they make nice snares (or garrote) in a pinch.

Gigli Wire saws are also handy and easy..just a wire and a couple small handles and you can cut most anything from trees to bone without the nuisance of safely carrying something huge and sharp around.

I didn't read through the entire thread but I'm sure someone said playing cards, sewing kit, surgical glue, chocolate or hard candy, 1-2 oz bottle of Lugol's solution?

Good wearable tread is very important in a shoe. Like your car tires, your shoes will need to be replaced when the tread wears down, if you can find a pair made well enough to lasts that long. Smooth soles are very dangerous.

Like a good glove, boots need to be tried on before you buy them, carefully fitted and examined for materials, quality and endurance. You are much better off with one good pair, over a dozen crappy ones.

Might break your knife tip, cut your hand or dull the blade. Better to have a can opener if possible. I think that was the point they try to convey.

Cutting your hand in a SHTF situation isn't a good option.

Three of my favorite items for roughing it are sheets and pillow cases, construction grade garbage bags and mylar emergency blanket material.

Sheets are compact, light weight and used to gather and carry large bundles, hang and protect meat from insects, drying food, protect shelter from condensation, shade, smoke screen, first aid, bug protection, many many uses.

I am sure you can figure out all the uses for mylar and the large heavy duty plastic bags. All light weight, compact inexpensive survival must haves.

If you have to break camp in a few seconds, toss everything on the sheet and tie into a big bag and toss on top of the car, tie down and go, drag or haul in on your back in hurry. It is a lot easier to work with than a tarp and a tarp creates condensation.

Green horns think they can cover up with a piece of plastic to stay dry. This is wrong, you will wake up soaking wet from condensation. You must make sure the plastic has an interior tight slope to run condensation off away from you and your gear. The sheet will prevent the condensation from collecting and dripping on you and help keep in the heat.
