Sick kids! First sniffles in 6 months!
So, I am around 5 kids from 4 families/4 different school districts.

Basically, they are my 2 kids, my boyfriend, sister and best friend's kids.

I work from home, so I have 0-5 kids every day depending on their various in-school vs. online school vs. parenting time schedules.

We had to do what we had to do - divorced, working parents have an awful lot of shit to deal with since March.

(Nevermind the my-house-is-safer-than-your-house divorce crap.)

Total madness.

Late last week, one kid who doesn't go to in-person school (hers doesn't open til October 15th or so) was sick with a sore throat, no fever, mild cough and runny nose.

Kid goes back and forth mom to dad, has an infant brother at mom's, and mom works in a doc office. I watched her sick mon and tues, with no other kids. She was feeling better by Thursday. She was babysat by her elderly grandmother Wednesday and home to her baby brother ... no one is quarantining this sniffling kid.

No adults sick. Then, on Friday I had two others. Today, the littlest one is sick - same deal. (Our moms would call it "tonsilitis" I think and that would be it - it's not strep - we know strep.

It's jarring because as a long time mom and aunt and babysitter ... this was the longest ever stretch without a sick kid.

Sick is back - but this can't be COVID. It's a regular cold where you either dose the kid with medicine and send them to school so you can go to work, or you take a sick day that turns out fun because no one is that sick.

The adults have more immunity to this thing going around than the kids.

But now we have a whole list of shit to consider ...

failed temperature checks, mandatory doctors notes, questionnaires ... none of us want to take these kids for COVID tests ...

What will they say when they ask if anyone in the house has COVID symtoms ... We'll be getting calls from coaches, school nurses ...

it's going to be a bunch of crap COVID or not - crap not worth doing - who needs this?

fuck all this nonsense ... they'd all be better off playing nerf in my backyard all year

I wouldn’t take them to get tested either. Opens up a can of worms.

It doesn't even warrant that ... but I have them some zinc lozenges, a little saline up the nose and put them to bed.

It's totally the common cold. Grandma, parents, and the baby brother all fine. The school age kids all sniffling now.

I know that the little one is going to be runny nosed all day because they just don't blow right at that age, and I might have to keep her home "out of an abundance of caution" because otherwise they'd send her home, and then there's a lot of hoops to jump through ...

the big one plays high school sports so there's that complication

damned if we do and damned if we don't

sigh

might as well throw this school year out the window with last, because it will be like this all year

Yeah and the parents and grandparents are all thinking the same thing ... we generally know when it warrants a strep test, for example, or a prescription cough medicine ... this is none of that

not even a fever, although they are acting a little fevery ... the thermometer says normal

in any other year, any parent would send them to school as-is

I think that's why I never catch it (whatever "it" "they" bring home).

I make a homemade honey and apple cider vinaigrette with raw garlic and use it on my salads all week ... came up with that a long time ago, not really for colds but for overall health ...

Sugar season, aka the Flu Season.

Coincides with all the holidays starting with Halloween ending with Super Bowl.

Get em off the Sugar and Slop diet.

I'm pretty good with the nutrition in my house, but they are kids out in the world, too ... you are probably right ... viruses love sugar.

Iodine, selenium, magnesium.

Haven't been sick in multiple decades. Cant remember the last time my children were sick. That's about two decades.

Learn to become your own doctor. Iodine is the gift they don't want you to know about.

There's your doctor approved endorsement. I had been taking this stuff a decade prior to finding him. Intellectuals, figure things out when others can not.

Thank you!

I will definitely check this out!

The thing is this is just a sniffle - so mild - no parent would think twice about this little cold if it wasn't for the COVID situation.

Not a problem. The trick is, these three supplements, you take year round. When cold season comes around, you may find that you have no cold to deal with. Ever.

Re: Sick kids! First sniffles in 6 months!
update:

called them out of school

they only attend monday and tuesday, so they now have an absence whereas they would have been virtual otherwise and no one would have known about the sniffle

waiting for a school nurse call back

i know what's going to happen

the little one's school nurse going to tell me not to worry - she's very laid back - it's a very laid back school district for NJ - they have been extremely flexible and they made me proud with their scrambling to open - she'll tell me not to worry and send her back when the nose running stops. She'll nurse-excuse the absence.

The older one's nurse will insist on a COVID test, or two weeks of virtual school and no sports.

The sports part is important to this kid, and it's important to me as it was the missing piece of the puzzle for this academically gifted but socially problematic kid. Being on the high school team has made all the difference so far.

So, we're going to have a test today.

also, about school:

mine go two days a week in person, 3 virtual

I asked my little one how school was last week

"it's getting easier"

I thought she was talking about the lessons and was a little confused as she never struggled ...

she was talking about the sneeze guards on her desk getting in her way, and the difficulties of eating lunch at her desk with the sneeze guard

it bugs her if it's "dirty"

she asks the teacher to windex it several times a day, apparently

Re: Sick kids! First sniffles in 6 months!
the little one is extremely freaked out by the whole affair

she recently met a new friend, the child of a divorced dad neighbor who visits every other weekend from a couple hours away

when the kid went home, she went in for a hug and my kid elbow bumped her instead

(I didn't teach her that, but it's ok - I teach them it's ok not to hug)

when I asked why the elbow bump and told her it was ok to play and no one is sick, she said ...

"I wanted her dad to know I'm safe with her."

Sigh.
