I lived on the Pine Ridge Reservation for a couple of years while teaching school there. I came to learn that it is like being in a separate country. ONLY federal law enforcement can enter and only for federal criminal cases. Local tribal police cut people a lot of slack if there is respectful behavior, and even if someone is dead drunk, they just put them in jail overnight to sober up, give them a sandwich and coffee in the morning, and let them go.

A great deal of emphasis is placed on which family you belong to. There are a half dozen powerful and influential families that people defer to in many situations. If I wanted to disappear off the grid I would get a set of fake ID on the street corner in south central Los Angeles, then pick one of the powerful families on the Rez and marry into it. It's a rough life there, with lots of problems, but an enterprising young person could figure out how to thrive.

There is a way. You live with someone who doesn't care about the radar and is willing to keep you a secret to other neighbors. Nothing can be in your name. You dont get mail there and if you do run into people, give them another name not connected to you. You can get a mailbox under an assumed business name and call it a suite. You can have a 2nd phone line and call it a business. Or trade identities with someone else. My dad did this his entire life and showed me how. Its dishonest but that's how it's been done.

Exactly why I remain with my abusive husband in these hard times. Better the enemy I know than the enemy I do not know. Yes, I could leave with my kids and probably would have done so already if had been any other year but 2020 and the BS that has gone on. But there is a usefulness in staying that I would be hard pressed to do alone. I wouldn't be able to prep the way I have, homeschool, and be a stay at home mom. Would I love to disappear off grid? Sure. But living with my abuser currently is the safest and most secure thing I could do at the moment. It gives me time to prepare for downfall coming. Time I wouldnt have if I was a single mother on the government dole and radar.
