If you're using Maitreya on Linux, or Windows (or whatever you use to aid your stargazing), I just thought I'd show you how to set a Fagan-Bradley Ayanamsa so you'll get some more accurate positioning results than going on default tropical.

The software handbook has listed some of the other common ayanamsas. I just use Bradley's basic because I don't think anyone has really improved on it.

Why did the Vedics hustle so quickly to work up their own ayanamsas? Well, you can't exactly have an Irishman like Dr Fagan setting you're 0 point standard in Spica from the UK.

It's a bit political and doesn't amount to a hill of beans in calculation practice.

Many seem to think Maitreya is just for doing Vedic charts.

However, it's a fully functional western chart application as well.

It has some advantages as it's already geared toward doing sidereal calculations. And it has most if not all of the features of the big, expensive professional players all for free.

"All that is gold does not glitter,
Not all those who wander are lost;
The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by the frost.

From the ashes a fire shall be woken,
A light from the shadows shall spring;
Renewed shall be blade that was broken,
The crownless again shall be king.” - Tolkien

"So, big deal" someone says. Well, not exactly. Where Maitreya gets powerful is when you add the Swiss Ephemeris.

Do you need to confirm an ancient Babylonian clay tablet reading? Good, you're in luck. With the Swiss Ephemeris you can do accurate calculations all the way back to 5401 B.C. That makes Maitreya worth an install all by itself, because if for no other reason, you can do Biblical and ancient near-eastern date confirmations just using this one astrological application and then chart it out like an ancient magus would have charted it.

No, Vedic astrology uses the sidereal ayanamsa. I believe the national Indian standard for holidays is the Lahiri ayanamsa.

However, you should be aware that Fagan-Bradley set the standard for positioning starting at Spica, and I don't believe Lahiri, or any of the dozen or so others improved on it. It was more a nationalistic move to have a Vedic set the sidereal standard than anything having to do with calculation differences.

Not a problem. It's a substantial piece of software and work on Linux/Windows/Mac I think.

It also has the classical Yoga interpretations for the aspects from Saravali and all the others. So if your doing historical research and you need some clues on ancient interpretations, it's not a bad bad to use as a springboard.

The next question that gets asked is, Can you calculate Arabic lots? Yep, you sure can. There's more than I can list here, but just click on Configuration, and then select Arabic Parts from the menu.

Why Arabic parts? Because even if you don't employ Astrology in praxis, understand that political powers in the world do. Therefore, you'll know what those who do are looking at. This is especially a useful piece of intelligence in dealing with issues that arise in the east.

You're most welcome.

Although we do not practice the profane superstitions of astrology, we do know that these celestial motions were all set and have meaning in the Mystery of Christ. What's one practical application for such a star plotting piece like Maitreya? Well, for example you can finally pin down the nocturnal passage of Venus on October 22, 539 B.C. which was predicted in poetic oracular annunciation through Isaiah the prophet in chapter 14 of his writing regarding the fall of 'Lucifer', that is to say the the aspect of Venus as Hesperus as the evening star fallen in the autumn, the very day that Cyrus the Great entered into Babylon in his royal train. When Venus was above the sun it was called Phosphorus the Morning Star. When it fell behind the sun, it was called Hesperus the Evening Star.

There are many uses for such an application, and some may even pertain to martial intelligence in the present world.

I consider Isaiah 14 to be one example of an ancient divine oracle that was purely astrological in nature that absolutely was fulfilled in the finest detail.

As you can see in the Greek Septuagint translation of the 70 translators in the 2nd century BC, they translate it as 'hesphorus', and I think they correctly translate the original intent of the Prophet here.

What is remarkable from history is that we know for certain that Cyrus did in fact enter Babylon as conqueror on October 22, 539 BC. And it just so happens that this was the first day Venus transited into its fallen aspect as the nocturnal evening star behind the sun. The very same day. That is a remarkable fulfillment of a Biblical prophecy.

Maitreya is free.

Just download it from the link I provided.

I looked around for quite a while, and I think Maitreya is the best bang for the buck.

I do 7 star sidereal, that's why I prefer the Fagan-Bradley Spica ayanamsa. But, really, Lahiri or any of the others are going to give you practically the same calculations.

You can spend a lot of money on high end astrology apps that don't do any more than you can do with Maitreya.

Why 7 star sidereal?

Well, it's usually because I'm hanging out between the 6th century BC and the 1st century AD.

The Chaldeans didn't do tropical astrology folks. They observed the motions as they were. And in the later models, they even measured for precession. So, in the spirit of the classical modes, I do 7 star. I'm trying to tap the ancient world and put myself in a position to see the world through the eyes of an ancient magian. It's kind of important for Biblical history and Mesopotamian worldviews to get into that mode.
