NASA has released footage and images from their probe's contact with an asteroid 200 million miles from Earth earlier this week.

The OSIRIS-REx spacecraft made contact with the 1,800-wide asteroid Bennue on Tuesday. Its mission? NASA's first-ever collection of dust and rock samples from an asteroid in space.

Judging from the newly released footage -- which you can watch below -- the Touch-And-Go (TAG) sample collection event appears to have been a success.

The footage shows OSIRIS-REx making contact with Bennu where the spacecraft immediately fires into the asteroid's surface to collect samples, sparking a debris cloud.

"The sampling event brought the spacecraft all the way down to sample site Nightingale, and the team on Earth received confirmation of successful touchdown at 6:08 pm EDT," according to NASA.

"Preliminary data show the sampling head touched Bennu’s surface for approximately 6 seconds, after which the spacecraft performed a back-away burn."
