Greek Islands involved are in sight of Turkish coast. Some are so close, migrants swim across.

I'm in the region at the moment, 100 or so miles south of the epicentre and we felt it here. Long, slow shake, just the right type to cause damage.

Emergency alerts have been going off all afternoon (it's 17.30 local here at the moment). Several tsunami warnings issued.

We had three or four shakes in rapid succession, none of them small here.

At least 20 buildings in Izmir, a Turkish city with population of 4.4 million, are said to have collapsed, Mayor Tunc Soyer told CNN Turk.

At least 14 people are dead and more than 200 are injured.

The Deputy Mayor of Eastern Samos said to ANT1 that buildings have fallen and that there are reports of large waves.

“It was an earthquake that lasted several minutes. Very strong.”
