Earthquake Advisory Issued For San Francisco Bay Area
October 31, 2007

In response to Tuesday evening’s magnitude-5.6 earthquake near the junction of the Calaveras and Hayward faults, the following statement was issued by the California Earthquake Prediction Evaluation Council, a panel of scientists chaired by the State Geologist that advises the Director of the Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (OES) on the scientific validity of earthquake forecasts and seismic activity in areas where damaging earthquakes have occurred in the past.

“A magnitude 5.6 earthquake occurred at 8:05 Tuesday evening (30 October 2007). The earthquake occurred near the junction of the Calaveras and Hayward faults in the southern San Francisco Bay Area. Both of these faults are known active faults capable of producing large, damaging earthquakes.

“CEPEC believes that this evening’s earthquake has significantly increased the probability above the normal level for a damaging earthquake along the Calaveras and/or Hayward faults within the next several days. However, the overall likelihood of such an event is still low. Scientists will be continuing to monitor the situation and advise OES of any changes.

In response to the CEPEC evaluation of this earthquake, OES recommends that residents of the San Francisco Bay region review their family emergency plans, check their emergency supplies, identify the “safe” and “potential danger” spots in each room, remove breakables from locations from which they can fall and cause injury, and stay tuned to the radio or television for further information. OES also recommends that government agencies and businesses review their plans. The “advisory” applies to the following counties: Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Monterey, San Benito, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, Solano and Sonoma.

Hi, I live in Sacramento...we didn't feel the earthquake yesterday. Sacramento is relatively earthquake-free, so not to worry. BTW, the weather is beautiful right now,,,I hope you have a good time!

I live in San Jose, but have been out of town. Going home Sunday.

I think the 5.6 was overdue. So the state is doing the right thing in trying to get people to stock up on emergency kits/supplies as the quake is fresh in their minds.

So I do not think there will be a large quake in near future, but if so I will be in the middle of it.

I grew up in the San Fran area and was there for the 89 quake...now THAT was a quake!

Most Californians don't break a sweat on anything less then a 5.5 quake.

"above the normal level for a damaging earthquake along the Calaveras and/or Hayward faults within the next several days. However, the overall likelihood of such an event is still low."

Is this statement a borderline Oxymoron? So anything ABOVE normal is still Low?

My brother still lives in Cali...Sacramento to be exact. He seems happy.
I personally didn't care for Sacramento...too far from the beach.

Not that my comment has any bearing on the topic at hand...I do believe Sacrament would be well protected from a big quake.

San Francisco is currently 35 years overdue for a quake of +8 or greater, fault monitoring is higher than ever before, TPTB are more afraid of panic than earthquakes, take the advise seriously.

The "normal" probability of a quake occurring within a given 3-day span along a given fault may only be .000001 (or .0001%). So even if something increases the likelihood of a larger quake to, say, .01% - a 100x increase 'above normal" - the probability of it actually happening (1 in 10,000) is still low.

Prophet Ann Gillian predicted in January that a wall of fire would encircle southern California in the fall...followed by an large earthquake...then a tsunami.

I would be looking to the Pacific to see if the tide is rising at this point.

Anybody listening?

Re: Earthquake Advisory Issued For San Francisco Bay Area
From the little I know about earthquakes I have learned that there needs to be minor quake activity to prevent the big ones from happening too often. If you check out this link
[link to www.iris.edu] and see where quake activity has been happening in the last five years - the purple dots, especially in the "ring of fire"; the pacific rim, you will notice that the west coast of the United States has had fewer minor quakes than the rest of the pacific rim. It makes me take stock of the situation and prepare myself, physically, mentally, and socially for any large events that have been predicted by scientists, psychics, and GLP enthusiasts for years.

In any event, information is power; do with it as you wish.
