Most likely they will have to spread some sodium bicarbonate to neutralize the acid and shovel it up into some drums. Gunna take some time but I cant see why they would make nearby folks to evacuate. |

Quoting: FellowTexan 320923Pretty close. They most likely will use soda ash, sodium carbonate. It is dirt cheap, the standard acid neutralizer for spills, and better than the bicarbonate due to less effervescence. Sulfuric acid is considered essentially nontoxic in its diluted state. Of course it is a hazard in the concentrated state such as battery acid which will give you a good contact burn. They'll absorb it with Na2CO3 then wash the area with H2O and absorb with more soda ash and cat litter(clay). I doubt they would evacuate unless there is a danger of it becoming an aerosol. |

Authorities responded to 417 Bethel Streetjust shortly after 5 p.m. to find the trailer resting in a ditch. No acid leaks were reported, though authorities set up a perimeter as a precaution. No injuries were reported. The driver, Nathaniel Eugene McGhee, 42 of Gibsonville said he was headed from his home to his sister's house to eat dinner before taking the load to Dubuque Iowa Saturday morning. McGhee said the 36,000-pound load with 13 pallets of batteries shifted, sending him into the ditch. The tractor trailer is owned by RT&T of Galina, Ill. Hazardous Material crews are on the scene working to unpack the load. The road remains closed while authorities clear the scene. Highway Patrol Trooper J.B. Hedrick said charges are pending, noting the accident was caused by speed and the load shifting. |
