Re: Burning Magnesium Fire
Burning chunks of magnesium metal in glowing red hot coals.
Normal radiant charcoal temperature = 750C
Magnesium Burn boosts thermal output to 3100C
That's 58% the surface temperature of the sun!

Re: Burning Magnesium Fire
Beware, burning magnesium emits in the blue-white visible spectrum, as well as the ultraviolet (UV) spectrum.

Do NOT watch burning magnesium with the naked eye!

There's a potential for ocular damage, much like staring at the sun, which is also ill advised.

For example, when I was younger and dumb and watched magnesium burn because I liked the way it reminded me of our stardrive power core and wanted to see the light within the light, but colours were washed out and whitish in the real world for months before I could see deep reds and greens again.

I didn't enjoy the colour loss at all.

Protect your eyes!

i got a tan on my face and hands even though it was the middle of winter!

Re: Burning Magnesium Fire
I used to work for a photo engraver back in the mid-seventies and we used photo sensitive magnesium plates to expose negatives on and then etch away the unexposed areas around the image or graphic in a nitric acid bath. The plates had to be further machined which produced piles and piles of magnesium shavings. Magnesium has a property that when it comes into contact with water it produces oxygen. I used to think it was great fun to get a steel five gallon bucket packed with shavings good and burning and then hit it with a stream of water from as far back as possible. The effect is astounding, think of a shuttle launch, only with the rockets pointing down. Pretty soon the bucket begins to melt and then the ash starts falling out the smoke that’s reached what seems like hundreds of feet. Cheap fun!

that does sound like fun!

Magnesium in water actually produces Hydrogen gas and Oxygen gas as it splits the H2O water molecule.

Usually this process is slow, but with powdered shavings it would be accelerated greatly! The liberated Hydrogen then recombines with Oxygen as a secondary reaction so you get a twofer with this play.

agreed, it also emits in the UV spectrum which can damage the eyes.

when i was younger and dumber, i did watch magnesium burn, and colours were washed out for me for a long time. i did get my colour depth back after a few months, but apparently that's rare and i'm lucky. don't look at it!
