Those super bright headlights... they should be banned, right?
Those things are too bright. For the bright setting, ok, but for the normal daily driver lights, they are too bright. How is it not self evident that they are damaging to people's eyes. I literally have to shield my eyes from them as I drive. I have very good eyesight, but am I that different?

they arebt going to make halogen illegal because the safety benefits outweigh the consequence of... opposing traffic being blinded.

The blue hued ones should be banned because they reduce (kill, really) night vision when they shine into the eyes of drivers of cars being met on the road. (dangerous)

Only red hued ones should be allowed.

I agree, OP. I have to look down and to the right side of the road when someone with those comes at me at night. I hate them.

After years of driving a beater with the old headlights, I recently bought a newer car and it has not halogen but something called Xenon headlights which are very bright white light. I don't like them but don't think they can be changed. Another weird aspect of them is that that there's a sharp line between what's lit up (in front of me) and what isn't. Unlike normal lights that kind of fade out around the distance, these create a sharp line of demarcation between where the lights shine and where they don't (just above, if that makes sense). The car manual warns they can blind an oncoming driver. WTF? Why even have them?

Well, from what's said in this article it looks like halogen are NOT the blinding type (they cast a yellow hued light) but the kind I have (Xenon) ARE:

The old style of headlights are called sealed-beam incandescent lights. I don't think they can be put in newer cars.

Why is everything in the US broken?

Everywhere else in the world, headlamp beams are adjusted to point to a certain distance.
Higher mounted truck lights point down more, not blinding oncoming drivers.

Xenon lights are very common in Europe.
We have to have self levelling lamps to limit the chance of blinding other drivers.

I am not sure (US-posters please correct) but afaik in most states of the US there is no mandatory annual car check.

Which, at least here, includes checking headlights for the correct distance setting and enough or too much (aftermarket stuff) brightness.

Fix it or lose allowance (and insurance protection) to use car on public roads with a few weeks grace period.

Lots of idiots that retrofit with aftermarket LED bulbs, but dont make sure that the new light source is in a properly focused reflector and properly aimed to avoid blinding light above the legal height.

Instead of a single point light source at the focal point of the reflector, it is multiple LEDs that are in front of the focal point, causing the light to spread out all over the place, including your eyeballs.

They used to actually check headlight aim on safety inspections in the old days. Otherwise people would drive around with one headlight aimed at the moon.

idk man most headlight fixtures, if you can install em, you should know how to adjust em, so your theory doesnt really stand to reason.

of course, there will always be the oddball driver, the exception. but yeah, nah.

As far a headlights go here in small town Texas, most guys have lifted trucks. Some headlights are at eye level. Police don't care but in the bigger cities they "may" make you disconnect the lights and mount them below the front bumper. But that's not easy to enforce as lifted trucks are becoming the norm. Even new car dealerships are selling the already lifted trucks with headlights 4-5 feet above the ground.

There's no annual check for headlight beam distance, they just check to make sure the bulbs aren't burnt out.

you live in a rich area where everyone has halogen an xenon bulbs.

or you live where there are a lot of hills.

or you live near a lot of black people who drive with their hi beams on all night.

or you are light sensitive and need to get over it :)
