Serta firm with pillow-top

Link (Black Friday Sale): [link to www.serta.com (secure)]
 Quoting: Proud Trump Supporter

Serta and its sub-brands (there are many owned by Serta) can collectively bite me. Read the 'fine print' on the so-called warranty. After only a few years the indentations in the pillow top were over the 2" declared in the warranty. They want the customer to pay something like $75 for an inspector to come to the house. If they find a dime-sized stain (and they will look until they find one) the warranty is deemed invalid. I bought 3 Serta's and the first was great, second was just OK, and the third was poor and now I will never buy another.

There are some good memory foam ones on amazon. Mine was under 400.00 with free shipping Prime and it is 14 inches thick. I love it.

We've had a sleep number for more years than I can remember and it's exactly the same as when we bought it.

The nice part is you can make it as firm or soft as you like and it will be that way for many years.

Purple hands down, and that's coming from someone that use to have a latex mattress. Back and neck pain/stiffness is truly gone.

Wife and I slide 2 queens together, she got a purple 3 I got a purple 4, They are wonderful an are covered by a 10 year warranty. If they sag or dip they send you a new one.

Also sleep number beds, the issue I had with them is that the mattress has the air coils in the middle area on the left and right, but in the edges and middle between the coils it’s foam and doesn’t feel the same, creating a sweet spot you have to lie in to be the most comfortable. So not great in my opinion.

No matter what, when my wife was pregnant, she never complained but lost sleep on a regular mattress. That ain't right and did not sit well with me as a responsible husband. We got a fine waterbed with a good interior and a liner. She slept like a baby.

And it's warm in winter. It wouldn't be so great if you lost power though, but be chilly.

Making love on a water bed is quite different as the height is lower and you can't do some positions very well. A guy can't stand and have his wife lay down in any position very well. So if adventurous, you might want to take that into consideration.

A pillowtop is very comfortable, but expensive for many.

Re: How Long Have U SLEPT ON THE SAME MATTRESS? IS IT NEW OR OLD. WHAT DO U RECOMMEND WHEN BUYING ONE? THANKS
I bought a hybrid memory foam/reg. mattress a couple of years ago after sleeping on the same much older mattress for 20+ years.(That one I co-habitated with my ex wife).

Am single now, but I like my legroom so am thinking about searching around on black Friday for a comfortable but firm mattress.

What do YOU sleep on? Any suggestions for what to buy these days? There is too many out there and it's confusing.

Thought I'd ask GLP.

Thanks in advance

The Original Mattress Factory. They still make double-sided flippable mattresses that stand up to years of use. They are built very, very well in their own small factories and are priced competitively. We have the Orthopedic Luxury Firm and it's great. You can order it with extra hard foam inserts along the side of the mattress at no extra charge if you want a very rigid edge too.

iCloud is the way to go. with an adjustable base.

the old original ones likely were. Now you have several styles to choose from with varying degrees of softness or firmness. They even have one that has a pillow top.

Sleep Number. I've had mine for 14yrs. It doesn't collect dustmite becase it uses an inflatable bag. You adjust the firmness and I have had the same quality of all of these years. I never have to feel like its getting indents.

They have a 20yr lifespan. Much, much longer than a traditional mattress. It uses air filled bags so it's not as much product going into a landfill.

We're going to keep this another 2yrs then get their cadillac version with duel adjusting bedsides and temperature control.

We paid 2k at the time and it has been worth every penny.

Tempur is not a giant sponge. It's not a cheap memory foam mattress. Believe me, they have FIRM if you want a firm. We got a style that was in between firm and soft (and I could have used one a little firmer) but we have had it almost 10 years and it's still very good shape. Believe me, you can get out of them if you aren't a whale.

Hey OP,

The only thing I can say is to stay away from the Sleep Number beds. I know two different families that had bought them over the years, and both had problems with them. The bed mechanisms broke.

Nowadays, I think there are so many good options that don't require coils that I would go that route... Just depends what you're looking for.

About 5 yrs on memory foam. Best mattress ever. Get a firm one, and heat is no problem. Too soft, and they wrap around you like a cocoon and make you sweat. They often feel too firm at first but soften after a few weeks.

Never, ever pay retail. The markup is astronomical. At mattress stores they *will* cut the price drastically if you ask. Don't be shy--they sure as heck aren't shy about the insane markups. Forget Macy's. Insane markups and little chance to negotiate.

If you get a spring mattress, more springs do not make it better or higher quality. The basic model is fine. More springs only means heavier.

Don't buy Simmons at all, and definitely not their spring versions. If you ever have to move one, they are stupid heavy.

Next one I buy for the kids will be the least expensive foam from Sam's, Costco, or similar, with decent ratings. They are all just chunks of foam.

Spring mattresses bounce around with movement. Foam hardly move. If you have a spouse, movement matters a lot if one gets out of bed earlier than the other. The only potential disadvantage to foam is heat retention if you buy one too soft.

Latex doesn't need to be flipped (at least mine doesn't). Going on 10 years with it and satisfied. They are heavy AF though. Not an issue unless you move frequently.

Tried that temperdic/memory foam crap and sent it back after 3 days. Was sweating like crazy every night. That was over 10 years ago, so maybe they've made improvements but I hated it then.

Memory foam but a good one.

I bought one which is too firm, so I put a foam overlay on it. Should have thought better, not to firm !!

I’ll never sleep on a mattress again. It’s bad for your back and spine, is pro aging, turns you into a hunch back and makes your face ugly because of mouth breathing. Because of it you won’t metabolize your food properly and will get fat. Beds are a luxury for those who have tons of money for health care, drugs, and maintenance procedures.

OP,

I followed the same basic path as you,,,tried the memory foam for years...like a firm, but not hard mattress.

I found it.

Stearns & Foster, Estate Mattress

Go lay on one for a while...I like the second one down from the most firm.

Can't go wrong...last one cost me about $1800 from mattress warehouse.

I was talking to a wealthy woman recently, who told me her friends told her there is NO WAY to get a good mattress for under $10,000. Whaaaat? Good God!

Anyway, I'm not a wealthy person, but finally got enuf to get a Beautyrest Black C-Class Medium Mattress with a Reverie adjustable base - for about $3000 all together. It's changed my life. I can sleep slightly elevated for my sinuses and the back and body pain I suffered with is GONE.

And I found this by going into a store, laying on many mattresses, and being guided by a great salesperson who listened to me and actually watched how my body laid on the mattresses! You need to find someplace like that.
