Is it possible to survive today with a dumb mobile phone?
I’m fed up with all the depressing news, the online toxicity and my attention span decrease. People online have become rude by default while in the past trolls were niche. Also staying up late to check forums. Anyone who has downgraded to a dumb mobile phone?

Re: Is it possible to survive today with a dumb mobile phone?
I have a flip phone. Never had a smart phone. I miss out on some conveniences, but do not want to be one of those zombies that can't stop touching their phone. It is disgusting. People are ADDICTED to their phones.

As an employer, employees were not allowed to have their smart phone out on their desk. It's like they forgot they can get a personal phone call to the phone on their desk. They think they are cut off from the world if they can't text everyone a play by play of their day. Millennials are the worst.

Yes I’m a Millennial and when I went back to a dumb phone in 2013-14 I was much happier and better mentally. The thing is back then I didn’t need Facebook. It helps for following local events when I go abroad as an expat.

Proud flip phone owner here. Never had a smart phone never will. Especially in todays social climate.

I don't often take my phone with me. 30 years ago, I got along just fine with a phone attached to the wall.

Technology has not delivered as promised. It's just made us more slave like and easier to track.

I still have a flip phone. It is fully sufficient, except for no GPS. I must buy a new 4G capable flip phone in 2021 to replace this 3G flip phone, which will become obsolete.

Barely. Tons of shit wants an "app" now.

FYI. You can install "apps" onto a chrome device.
Where you have far better control of what's going out. And no cell connection.

But at least you don't become a phone zombie. Spend all day on your phone and never acomplish anything. Never learn anything useful. Never do anything but mindless scroll.

Those people are so sad. And they're now a majority.
We should turn off the cell towers for a week and watch them melt down just for funzies.

^^^^^THIS GUY GETS IT!^^^^^ I've never owned a cellphone and instead rely on my landline just like the police, emt and fire departments and hospitals all do... because there are very good REASONS they maintain those "old-fashioned" comm services - not the least of which is that fact that those lines carry their own independent power supply.

The nitwits that have their faces glued to their little Star Trek communicators never knew what life was like before PC's lived one for them.

I'm lucky enough to be so old I remember the era of true BS:
"Before Stereo", when electric typewriters were still a novelty in many offices and you could get a Western Union telegram delivered right to your door -day or night- by a kid in a snappy uniform. And those yellow slips of thin paper carried a weight that no Texting, Twitter or Fakebook post can ever match.

Those telegrams may have been expensive [avg $20-30], but then you also didn't have to shell out $800 for a little gadget just to get that message, either... you tipped the guy at the door fifty cents and opened that envelope with your heart racing a little bit because you already KNEW it was something very important.

You see: back then we PRIORITIZED! When you totally embrace mass-messaging, at some point it all blends together into meaningless chatter rendering it impossible to separate truth from fiction and reality from fantasy... as the users become totally oblivious to any distinctions between the two.

Flip phones are nice. I used to have one for work. Now that I'm in another position, I don't need to have a cell phone...

Sure, they are great in an emergency; but I prefer the old school land line phone. Any telemarketers go direct to an answering machine (remember those...lol)...

If the power goes out, I have a corded land line phone that will work. Don't have to worry about the cell towers going down or the batteries running low on your cell phone...

Yes it is possible to survive WITHOUT a mobile phone...

Wife has one. I won't carry one, neither smart of dumb, though. People in the know are aware why you shouldn't.

Have you ever noticed the smarter tech gets, the dumber the general population becomes? Personal assistants take the place of memory. Spelling ,grammar and math go next, then the news feed takes the place of social interaction.

The possibility are endless

Re: Is it possible to survive today with a dumb mobile phone?
I know several people who still use flip phones. They get by just fine.

I've considered getting one for emergencies or whatever as their battery lasts more than a day. No need to constantly run and find an outlet like most people do. Just keep the damned thing in your pocket and a week later it still works without charging it.

Unfortunately, due to my business I have to have a smart phone in order to run things. I do a bit of traveling and laptops and tablets are just too bulky to be carrying around. My phone is one of the higher end ones and I can do most of the things on it that you can do on a laptop or PC that my business requires. So it's a money maker.

The one perk to them is the GPS directions. Although you can get by just fine with a Rand McNally Road Atlas. That's all I had to travel by for years and I always made it great. I have the 2021 one in my car in case my phone fucks up or some shit. So there are definite alternates to smart phones.

There is peer pressure to have one. You aren't cool or trendy if you don't have a smart phone up your ass these days. It's a fucking ploy to keep tabs on everyone at all times.

I don't even use my phone at all unless I'm going on a road trip, it just sits on my desktop uncharged. If I'm planning to go somewhere I'll charge it in case I need my map, or I'll just grab a notebook and write down the instructions before I leave. I use my computer for communication otherwise.

"no GPS"... LOL!!! You NEVER would've made it back in the 50's-60's when every highway gas station had big racks of free road maps and even the Goober's in Mayberry-towns had smaller ones. And learning to use those maps was half the fun of traveling!

You'd unfold those big bastards [they could be up to 3'x3'!] and snake your finger along the little red or black lines that showed roadways... and hopefully you wouldn't mistake one for a creek or river! The good ones even listed the elevations of towns, valleys and mountains.

The REAL adventure came when you had to fold those fuckers back up and more than one was flung out the window of the car in frustration, or just to avoid divorce court! No worries since you could always get another at your next bladder-drain. And if worse came to worse and you got lost, that too could be part of the fun of a family vacation. Just ask Clark Griswold!

As a young man, I once worked for AAA as a trip advisor where I'd custom-assemble "Trip-Tiks" for our clients - little flip-maps that I could assemble to THEIR personal specifications: if they wanted the FASTEST direct route, no problem! But, if they wanted to "see the sights" I could do that, too. Depending upon the area, each 4"x8" map covered from 25-50 miles of road and they were all spiral-bound at the top so you could hold them in one hand... and never had to fold them up!

We had special maps that just showed large cities where we could take you right to a person's door, if needed. Our offices had teletype machines that got hourly reports on weather and road conditions as well as radar speed traps - and we noted those last two on our Trip-Tiks with little rubber stamps. All maps were updated at least annually with many urban areas reprinted every six months. You got a LOT for your $19 annual membership back then since we also had free Emergency Roadside Service for an empty gas tank, flat tires/towing [back then there were free telephones scattered along major highways specifically for stranded motorists that connected you directly to the nearest Highway patrol office] and major discounts on food, lodging and tickets. And many insurance companies even knocked a few bucks off the premiums of AAA members...until they too eventually offered ERS to their customers.

We also supplied detailed guidebooks that listed every fully-rated attraction, motel and restaurant along their route that were far more accurate than "YELP!" because we [and our clients] CHECKED on those businesses we listed - if they didn't measure up every six months then that blue-silver AAA decal was scraped off their windows!

GPS? You have no idea what you missed out on by being born into this technology age. The world then was not only safer, it was also a more enjoyable place to live where people actually used their brains instead of their opposable thumbs or a disembodied AI voice for information and knowledge.
