Wood pulp as fiber in bread:
[link to www.nytimes.com (secure)]

We sit at a table delightfully spread,
And teeming with good things to eat,
And daintily finger the cream-tinted bread,
Just needing to make it complete
A film of the butter so yellow and sweet,
Well suited to make every minute
A dread of delight.

And yet while we eat
We cannot help asking “What’s in it?
Oh, maybe this bread contains alum and chalk,
Or sawdust chopped up very fine,
Or gypsum in powder about which they talk,
Terra alba just out of the mine.

And our faith in the butter is apt to be weak,
For we haven’t a good place to pin it
Annato’s so yellow and beef fat so sleek,
Oh, I wish I could know what is in it?”

One of those additives the FDA had to regulate? Cellulose, a plant fiber often taken from wood. Cellulose was “Generally Recognized As Safe” by the FDA in 1973, and it’s in a lot of food. You can tell because every few years one publication or another publishes a story along the lines of “Did you know there’s wood pulp in … ?” Burgers, tacos, cheese, ice cream! And, of course, bread.

A mortality cohort study was undertaken among Polish pulp and paper workers. This paper concentrates on neoplasms mortality among men and women employed continuously for at least one year in the factory producing sulphate pulp, paper board and paper products. A retrospective observation carried out till 31 December 1995 covered 10,460 workers employed during the years 1968-1990. The cohort accessibility was 99%. Cancer risk was evaluated on the basis of standardized mortality ratio (SMR) calculated according to the person-years method.

I worked in Dow Chemical, in Midland MI, as an Iron worker.
One building made this wood pulp stuff, mixed with other stuff, who knows what. You could take a tablespoon full, mix in a large glass of water. By the time you were done stirring it, the spoon would stand up in it, it was thick. All the fast food places would be lined up with semi trucks, loading up with that crap. Think milkshakes.

Depraved of butter? Thieves made off with $200,000 worth of butter, and inflation may be to blame

“Is it me or is #butter much harder now at room temperature?”

The senior director of Dalhousie University’s Agri-Food Analytics Lab followed up his observation with a Twitter poll on Feb. 9 in which 52.9 per cent of respondents said their butter was “no longer soft at room temperature since about August 2020.”

An “open secret” in the industry as a way to increase butterfat in cow’s milk, “many” Quebec dairy producers told the Journal they use palm oil, speaking under the condition of anonymity. Several cheese makers also expressed apprehensions about the practice, which has been in place for decades, according to a Producteurs de lait du Québec spokesperson.

Awe, pretty boy!

One of my cats has that type of fur. She was beautiful, but she's crazy. She started tearing out her fur when we first got Butters. She was always wild so I get that she was stressed. Now they're friends, but I don't think she can stop. She's bald halfway down her rump & belly.

Good morning all.

Trapped at the old house while Mrs. is trapped at the new home behind the first blizzard / storm / shiat Wx of the year.

At least I have food and carried the AT&T WiFi and my laptop here; Mrs. has the Hughes at our new place.

There is food enough to prevent my immediate demise.

Good for you Louis! Hope your Mrs stays warm and calm.

Bastecat, such a beautiful cat! I'm sorry you are having the blues remembering. Did you get any other kitties to help the pangs of sorrow? How long ago did smokey kitty pass away? So sad.

This has been weekend of food, RS's bday bfast food:
Scratch all strawberry pancakes, fried green tomatoes and ham, with over easy eggs and Runamok vanilla infused maple syrup, chicory coffee from the big easy.

Last night was leftover spaghetti and lemon/caper pan sautéed pork chops. Cake is a chocolate raspberry from WF.

Yesterday's lunch: sticky rice cooked w dried morel mushroom bits, served under sauteed shrimp w julienne leek, broccoli and shrimp w a sauce of coconut milk/chicken stock and a dollop of peanut butter. I'll edit w a slo-mo in a few.

Hey peeps! How yall doin? Holidays cooking was awesome fun, but still a bit exhausting, keeping up with cleaning cookware and dishes, and I always worry about whether or not my food tastes great. Luckily it always does, and I think that's just because when you put love into your food it will always be great.

So, not making torillas tonight, just guac, pico, and taco meat. Son loves that, but he also loves flour torillas, nothing wrong with that I guess. I'd order out but he likes that I cook for him. About 99.9% sure his ma doesn't do that, well, that was random and irrelevant. Hope you all have great suppers tonight! Peace.
